Play It Again, Sholom

A rare collection of music and voice recordings is
discovered in Kiev.

Jerusalem — An unparalleled
collection of Eastern European
Jewish musical folklore — the
whereabouts of which had been
unknown since 1949 — has been
rediscovered by a Hebrew Uni-
versity of Jerusalem researcher.
Professor Israel Adler, direc-
tor of the Hebrew University's
Jewish Music Research Cen-
ter, found the treasure in stor-
age at the Vernadsky Library
of the Ukrainian Academy of
Sciences in Kiev.
As a result of this discovery,
an agreement was signed be-
tween the Vernadsky Library
and the Hebrew University of
cooperative efforts to preserve,
restore and catalogue the col-
lection. The agreement was
arranged under the sponsor-

which preserves the musical tra-
ditions of an extremely rich peri-
od in European Jewish culture
just prior to its near total de-
struction by the Nazis and col-
laborators. Among the items
discovered is an early version of
the popular Hebrew song, "Hava
Nagila," and recordings of the

also have backed the project. The
agreement will permit access to
the material by scholars and oth-
ers in the musical world.
The collection incorporates
thousands of individual tunes,
many dating back to 1912, in-
cluding musical recordings on
cylinders and pages of hand-
written copies of sheet music and
text. The material consists main-
ly of Yiddish folk songs, klezmer
tunes, cantorial pieces, Sabbath
melodies and Chasidic songs.
Professor Adler pointed out the
significance of the Kiev collection,

voices of author Sholom Aleichem
and actors Sholom Mikhoels and
Hanna Rovina.
The musical collection is based
primarily on two stages of work.
The first was conducted under
the auspices of the ethnographic
expedition to Eastern Europe
headed by Semyon Ansky in
1911-14. The second, highly pro-
ductive, stage was from 1928-49
within the framework of the Mu-
sical Ethnographic Cabinet at the
Institute of Jewish Culture of the
Ukrainian Academy of Sciences.
Moshe Beregovski, one of the im-
portant musicologists and eth-
nomusicologists of the 20th
century, founded and directed the
musical cabinet.
