Hebrew Free Loan Association Mission Statement: To continue to serve our community as the bridge
between hope and despair, the path from dependence to independence, is the challenge for the next century.
Hebrew Free Loan has provided an invaluable service to our community for 100 years. Its aim, as stated in
the by-laws, says it all: "The purpose of the Association is to provide financial assistance to Jewish people in
Metropolitan Detroit through the lending of money without interest." Individuals utilizing Hebrew Free Loan
can maintain their dignity; they are not recipients of charity. These loans help people to help themselves. To
quote David W Simons in a letter written in 1923: "There is no service so valuable to any person as a service
which helps people to maintain dignity and self respect."
