Senior Division

NAME: Anthony Kandel
TEAM: Head football coach of
Bloomfield Hills Cranbrook
Kingswood Upper School
DEED: Kandel, 34, is the only Jew-
ish high-school varsity football
coach in Michigan. He was born
in California and now resides in
Bloomfield Hills.
He is starting his second year
as Cranbrook's coach. Last year,
in his inaugural season, Kandel
led the team on to win the 1994
Metro Conference championship
with an 8-1 record.

school football in Hawaii and the
Watts area of Los Angeles. He
moved on to become an assistant
professor of political science at
Lander University in South Car-
olina, but it had no football team.
As well as being Cranbrook's
football coach, Kandel is chair-
man of its history department. He
teaches classes to upper-school
students.
QUOTE: "Dancing is a contact sport;
football is a hitting sport," Kan-
del said. "I love the game because
it takes both the physical and
mental combination to win. My
model is Vince Lombardi (berg)."

Cranbrook is a Class-B division
school. The team's first game is a
home-opener today at 4 p.m.
against Detroit Renaissance High
School. The Jewish players are
Keith Slotkin and Matt Toth.
The team practices each day
after school for a few hours. Kan-
del admits he is a hard discipli-
narian and tough coach, but also
gives compliments when they are
earned. He says right now the
guys are "ignoring the heat and
focusing on tenacity."
Although the team lost 10 good
seniors from last year, including
three top Jewish players, Kandel
says, "it is a rebuilding year, and
goals are high."
THE SKINNY: Kandel has been play-
ing football since age 5. In high
school, he was quarterback for a
California team.
He also played quarterback all
four years at Pomona College in
Clairmont, Calif., where the
coaches of the SKIAC league pre-
sented him with All-League hon-
ors in 1982 and 1983. In addition,
Kandel earned a doctorate in po-
litical science at University of
Southern California.
He went on to play profession-
al football for two years in the
Netherlands American Football
Federation (NAFF). Kandel, who
was a . quarterback in Holland,
was voted the NAFF league's
most valuable player in 1987.
After playing in Europe, Kan-

NAME: Kevin Granader
TEAM: Sports agent and attorney
at Turner & Turner law firm in
Southfield
DEED: Granader, 30, is becoming
well-known throughout the na-
tion in the sports management
field for representing some top
professional athletes. He is an
agent who negotiaties contracts
for all types of sports players. \
He recently concluded a $6-mil-
lion contract for Pepper Johnson
of the Cleveland Browns for a
four-year extension as well as a
television and radio clause worth
additional funds.

In his last year of law school,
1991-92, Granader was a mar-
keting agent for Benny Blades
and Barry Sanders of the Detroit
Lions. He also represented Pep-
per Johnson in contract negotia-
tions when he was still with the
New York Giants.
Granader has also represented
minor league baseball players in
the United States and basketball
players overseas.
THE SKINNY: Granader has been in-
terested and active in sports all
his life. He grew up in a very ath,-/
letically oriented family. His fa-
ther played football for Ohio
State's Woody Hayes.
