winter league. But the 22-year-old
plans to continue his college edu-
cation.
For the past two years, he has
been enrolled in classes at Stan-
ford. Most of his classes have been
general education and psycholo-
gy courses.
When Green isn't on the field,
he likes to read, mostly novels and
classic literature. He is learning
how to play golf and when there's
time, he likes to hang out at the
beach with friends.

"We don't talk about baseball
all that much," Green said about
his friends. in California. "They
watch to see what I'm doing, but
we really don't spend that much -
time talking about it. When we see
each other, we hang out, talk
about girls and discuss friends
from home."
Green, who born in Chicago,
lived in New Jersey fora few years
before he, his parents and his old-
er sister settled in California.
"I never had a bar mitzvah and
I didn't go to Hebrew school," he
said. "I think it would have been
nice. But as a kid, I was always re-
ally busy with sports."
After nearly an entire season in
the Majors, Green is getting used
to the autographs, the road trips
. and the excitement of playing for
. a major-league baseball team.
When the season began in
.April, Green could walk the streets
of Toronto unnoticed. Now fans
are beginning to recognize him. "I
can't say it happens all the time,
but people will come up to me and
say, 'Are you Shawn Green?"
For some, fame comes with a
price. In July, Toronto teammate
Roberto Alomar was stalked by an
obsessive fan. She was arrested in
the SkyDome with a loaded gun.
Green said the incident didn't
impact him. "It can't," he said,
dismissing it as "one of those
things." ❑

OAKLAND YARD ATHLET-
ICS will host the Jose Cuervo

—Invitational 6's Volleyball Tour-
nament on Sunday, Sept. 3. The
first-and second-place teams will
go on to compete in the champi-
onship finals at Atwater Beach
on Sept. 9. The winning team will
earn a trip to Florida.
Cost to enter the tournament
is $15 per person with all of the
proceeds going to the Michigan
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome
Alliance.
