comes even more specifically a
Jewish tourist attraction. On
Sukkot, a tent is set up in the
back yard and visitors are told
about this holiday. During
Chanukah, the menorah candles
are lit each evening and special
tours include an explanation of
Chanukah.
"And on Passover, we set the
table for a seder, and one of the
religious schools does a program
in the dining room," said Ms.
Collins. "The house is considered
an educational tool as well as a
museum."
Besides this historic Jewish
house, Norfolk offers visitors a
look at modern Jewish life, Tide-
water style. For instance, just a
short distance from the Moses
Myers House is Ohef Shalom
synagogue at 530 Raleigh Av-
enue. The two-story corner brick
building across from a tranquil
park is headquarters for a large
Reform congregation of 800 fam-
ilies.
Inside, Cathryn Morton, bar
mitzvah director, showed me the
extensive library with reading
chairs and floor to ceiling book-
shelves. "It's the best Jewish li-
brary in the area," she said with
pride.
Then we went into the 700
seat sanctuary. Built in 1917, it
is a spacious room with high ceil-
ings and stained glass windows
on two sides. "We think it's one
of the most beautiful sanctuaries
in the entire state," said Ms. Mor-
ton.
Not far from Ohef Shalom is
the Jewish Community Center
of Tidewater at 7300 Newport
Avenue, a large modern facility
with dome-enclosed swimming
pool, tennis and racquetball
courts.
Next stop: a place that offered
a taste — literally — of Jewish
Tidewater. The popular restau-
rant known as Uncle Louie's is
located near the JCC at 132 East
Little Creek Road.
Although the food is not
kosher, it's definitely Jewish
style.
The restaurant draws a wide
cross-section of Norfolk folk:
politicians (some sandwiches are
even named for notables, like the
Chuck Rob-burger), naval clien-
tele, locals, tourists, and many
from Norfolk's Jewish communi-
ty, especially with the JCC just
a half mile away.
"We call this "JCC North' "
says Uncle Louie, a Norfolk na-
\_ tive who opened the restaurant
/-3 in 1984 and saw it grow to be-
come one of the top 250 indepen-
dent restaurants in the United
States.
With his southern drawl and
personable style, Uncle Louie
clearly enjoys presiding over his
domain and schmoozing with his
\ patrons. "Its hard work, Darlin,' "
'ne says about his bustling and suc-
cessful re3t.a -ara_nt. "But it's oils:: a
lot of fun." El
