ECI Signs Phone
Agreement

Jerusalem — ECI Telecom and
the Philippines Telegraph and
Telephone Corporation (PT&T)
announced the signing of a $30
/—
million agreement.
The pact covers long-term fi-
nancing and the supply of Syn-
chonous Digital Hierarchy
(SDH) transmission systems
and Access Subscriber Loop
Multiplexers (ASLMX) to
PT&T.
PT&T is one of several do-
mestic telecommunications car-
riers, in addition to national
carrier Philippines Long Dis-
tance Telephone (PLDT), li-
censed to provide service in
predetermined areas.
PT&T is constructing a
300,000-line telephone network
program serving Manila and the
Laguna Lake region.
The SDH equipment will be
used primarily to connect ex-
changes with other telecommu-
nications providers, said PT&T
president Jose Luis Santiago.
SDH equipment combines
different types of digital data,
=, such as voice, data, and video on
fiberoptic cables. SDH and its
US counterpart SONET provide
the basis for current telecom-
munications technology.
The addition of ASLMX tech-
nology will enable PT&T to in-
expensively add up to 125,000
new subscribers. The equipment
\= will be supplied over a 30-month
period, starting in September.
The deal with PT&T is not
connected to previously an-
nounced talks between ECI and
PLDT.
