Torah Scroll
Is Dedicated
When a new Torah Scroll is be-
ing brought to the Synagogue, it
is customary to do it with great
rejoicing. The Torah is carried
under a chupah - the canopy
used at a Jewish wedding, and a
procession of people singing and
dancing with musical instru-
ments accompany the Torah to
the synagogue.
Friends of Refugees of East-
ern Europe will host a dedication
of a historic Torah scroll on Sun-
day, Sept. 3, at 2 p.m. at the Beth
Jacob School, Ten Mile Road and
Church Street. A procession will
go to the Jimmy Prentis Morris
Jewish Community Center. The
dedication ceremony will be ac-
companied by music and danc-
ing.
The highlight of the program
will be a concert by Cantor
Berele Zaltzman, who will per-
form cantorial renditions and
popular Jewish songs in Russ-
ian, Yiddish and Hebrew.

Daniel Sobolnitzky
The Torah was brought to De-
troit by Daniel Sobolnitzky. As
the Nazis were approaching the
borders of the town of Preluke
near Nezhin in the Ukraine, the
Torah scrolls had to be hidden
out of sight of the enemy. Sever-
al men, including Mr. Sobol-
nitzky, took a Torah and hid it
in their homes. One of four
Torahs was brought by him to
Detroit.
