END OF MODEL YEAR JCC Asks CCS: Shall We Dance? JENNIFER FINER STAFF WRITER he "marriage" may sound strange, but in reality it makes a lot of sense. Earlier this year, when the Jewish Community Center began examining the possibility of expanding its music and dance programs without hiring addi- tional teachers, the only logical option was to bring in a pre-ex- isting program — a task often easier said than done. At the same time, the Center for Creative Studies, one of De- troit's top arts-education institu- tions, wanted to expand its Institute of Music and Dance be- yond its pre-existing location in Detroit and a Grosse Pointe ex- tension. Both organizations say it was fate that brought them together. "CCS does the best job of pro- viding what we're looking for," said Chris Lewis, the di- rector of operations for the JCC. "They offer a high caliber of instruction and they were very receptive to our offer. This is a win- win situation for every- one." Beginning Sept. 11, over two dozen CCS mu- sic and dance classes will be offered at the JCC, in- cluding ballet, jazz, tap, East Indian, family and Russian folk dance. Among the music op- portunities are private lessons for clarinet, flute, guitar, oboe, piano, saxo- phone and voice. "We were looking for a new suburban-branch lo- cation," said Michael Stockdale, the director of CCS' In- stitute of Music and Dance. `This arrangement is mutually benefi- cial. We like the fact that part of the JCC's mission is to reach out to its community. It goes along with our desire to continue being accessible to the greater commu- nity. This arrangement helps to further both of our missions." This isn't the first time the JCC has collaborated on its class- es. Some of the martial arts and sports and fitness classes are con- ducted on a contractual basis. The CCS arrangement marks the first time an enrichment course is run through an outside source. Under the CCS/JCC arrange- ment, CCS handles the registra- tion and provides the instructors. The JCC helps publicize the classes and allows them to be taught in its Maple-Drake build- ing. ❑ CLEARANCE Everything Drastically Reduced! HURRY IN WHILE SELECTION IS STILL GOOD.
