activities, in-between. He esti-
mates having spent 20 to 30 vol-
unteer hours each week wearing
his president's hat.
His vitae of volunteer services
also includes work with Chil-
dren's Hospital, the Communi-
ty Foundation for Southeastern
Michigan, the Council of Jewish
Federations, Detroit Area of Boy
Scouts of America, Detroit Med-
ical Center, Kresge Foundation,
Michigan Cancer Foundation and
others.
This latest post as Federation
president doesn't end Mr. Page's
37-plus years of community ser-
vice. He will continue as chair-
man of the executive committee.
Sitting at his antique desk in
the downtown law offices of
Honigman Miller Schwartz and
Cohn, Mr. Page admits to enjoy-
ing little free time. Spare mo-
ments find him with family or,
not surprisingly, involved in a
community-service activity.
"That's pretty much what I do,"
he says. "I do it because I think
people have an obligation to give
back to a community that has giv-
en so much to them, and because
people — each person — can
make such a difference." 0

president of Shir Shalom and a
driving force in making the new
building a reality. Mr. Sampson
died earlier this year.
During the dedication cere-
mony, Rochelle Sampson affixed
a mezuzah in the temple's lobby.
The entranceway is named in
memory of her husband.
Rabbi Schwartz, who credited
Mr. Sampson's efforts, told con-
gregants as they stood outside the
new building: "When your chil-
dren see this Torah, I beg of you,
remember this story.
"From nothing came some-
thing," the rabbi said. "Any
dream can be turned into a re-
ality. Thanks for trusting me
when nobody would."
Once inside the sanctuary, con-
gregants sat in folding seats. The
permanent chairs will arrive be-
fore the holidays. And aside from
other modest details, the con-
struction was complete.
For the first time, congregants
assembled in their new sanctu-
ary, the Torah scrolls were placed
in their new ark, the choir took
its spot next to the ark and Rabbi
Schwartz and Rabbi Michael
Moskowitz got a taste of what it
will be like to lead services in the
building.
"I have this belief that goals
should be just out of your reach,
but not out of sight. This build-
ing is just a place to put you in,"
Rabbi Schwartz said to the
packed sanctuary, which in-
cluded local rabbis and political
figures. "You are the reason we're
here." EJ
