Dr. Sheryl Young

Dr. Sheryl R. Young, 37, former Detroiter of
Gibsonia, Pa., died Aug. 28. A statistician for
the state of Michigan and also a clinical psy-
chologist, Dr. Young graduated from Univer-
sity of Michigan, Honors College with a degree
in mathematics and psychology in 1978. She
received her master's in psychology from Wayne
State University in 1980 and her Ph.D. in 1984
from University of Colorado, Institute of Cog-
nitive Science.
A published author and speaker for numer-
ous international conferences, she was also a
reviewer for National Science Foundation for
the Robotics and Intelligent Systems Division,
Division of Behavioral and Cognitive Sciences
and the Minority Research Initiation. Dr. Young
also served a reviewer for the Army Office of
Research, IEEE Transactions on Speech and
Audio Processes, IEEE Transactions on
Acoustics, Speech and Signal Processing, Com-
puter Speech and Language, Machine Trans-
lation, Journal of Experimental and Theoreti-
cal Artificial Intelligence, Theoretical Artificial
Intelligence Journal, IEEE Expert, IEEE Press,
IEEE Conference on Tools for Artificial Intel-
ligence and the 8th International Parallel Pro-
cessing Conference.
Dr. Young was the program chair of the spe-
cial session of ICSLP held in Japan in 1994,

HORTENSE HERMAN
"DOODIE" ALPER, 72, for-
mer Detroiter of Las Vegas,
Nev., died Aug. 24. Mrs. Alper
was the beloved wife of the late
Sam Alper and the loving
daughter of the late Rose Her-
man and the late John Herman.
She is survived by son and
daughter-in-law, Jerry and
Jacqui Kaufman of Farmington
Hills; daughter and son-in-law,
Cindy and Stuart Spechler of
Newton, Mass.; brother and sis-
ter-in-law, Donald and Bluma
Herman of Grand Rapids;
grandchildren, Johnny and Ja-
cob Kaufman, Dawn, Diana and

SARAH COHEN, 83, former
Detroiter of Lauderdale Lakes,
Fla., died Aug. 28. Mrs. Cohen
was the beloved wife of the late
Saul Cohen and loving sister of
the late Max and Louis Stotzky.
She is survived by her daugh-
ters and sons-in-law, Gloria and
Jim Stark of Grand Rapids,
Marlene and Jerome Lipman of
Southfield; sisters, Molly Zager
of Lauderdale Lakes, Minnie
Haking of Oak Park; grandchil-
dren, Brad Stark, Glen and

Spring Symposium, and a session chairperson
of IJCAI in Detroit in 1989.

Dr. Young had many books

to her credit.

IEEE Computer Society, IEEE Signal Pro-

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Wayne
Ward; parents, Sidney and Rosalie Young of
West Bloomfield; sisters and a brother-in-law,
Julie Young, Michelle and William Sider; grand-
mother, Mary Feldman. Interment at Beth El

MABEL AUGUST KAPLAN,
93, of Southfield, died Aug. 24.
Mrs. Kaplan earned her bache-
lor of arts degree in education
from the University of Michigan
in 1923 and taught and was the
assistant principal at White El-
ementary School in Detroit.
Mrs. Kaplan was also a member
of Temple Beth El, Franklin
Hills Country Club, Hadassah
and a lifelong active worker for
the Jewish Federation of Metro-
politan Detroit.
