hopefully a picnic will help
save lives. The recent death
of Detroit radio personality
J.P. McCarthy highlighted the
need for bone-marrow donors. It's
a need Temple Israel will address
during its annual picnic on La-
bor Day, Monday, Sept. 4, from
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the temple.
In addition to picnic food, fun
and a blood drive, Temple Israel
will sponsor a bone-marrow reg-
istry.
"Everyone eligible should reg-
ister," says Eva Shapiro, Temple
Israel's executive director. "The
chance to help a fellow Jew over-
come a fatal disease is too im-
portant to forgo."
Donor marrow, to save a life,
must match the recipient's. Mi-
nority groups encounter partic-
ular challenges because marrow
type, like skin and hair, is deter-
mined genetically. Jews are more
likely, therefore, to find matches
within the Jewish population.
Every year, hundreds of pa-
tients with blood diseases like
leukemia die waiting for match-
es. There are 1.7 million people
in the United States who have
registered their marrow types,
but, says Sharon Brooks with the
Southeastern Michigan Marrow
Program, that's not enough.
"The biggest challenge is just
to get people to understand the
need for potential donors," she
says.
Registration, along with the
temple picnic, is free and open to
the public. Healthy adults be-
tween the ages of 18 and 55 may
register. The National Marrow
Donor Program Registry, which
is co-sponsoring the drive, re-
quires volunteers to sign consent
forms. The process removes a
small sample of blood and takes
10 to 15 minutes.
Costs are being covered by the
Evan Shapiro Fund For the
Fight Against Cancer, and the
Navy Fund, made available
through the National Bone Mar-
row Registry. For more informa-
