ith the days growing
shorter and the
nights becoming a lit-
tle cooler, it must
mean one thing— it's about that
time to head back to school.
As children, most of us looked
forward to September with
mixed feelings. We knew the
thrill of sleeping in and spending
hot summer days at the pool or
at camp were about to end. We
also knew the nights of endless
homework would be imminent.
The new clothes, school supplies
and the anticipation of learning
who our teachers and classmates
would be made it exciting.
(Maybe now is the time to take
that short family vacation before
the children become burdened
with work and after-school ac-
tivities.)
When students get back into
the school routine and the
homework begins to pile up, the
power struggle between parent
and child begins. We talked with
specialists and parents about how
to handle this ever-so-common
situation. And when family prob-
lems become too tough for par-
ents to handle themselves, our
article on psychotherapy for chil-
dren gives expert advice on when
it's time to seek professional help.
In addition to our back-to-
school focus on children, we've
also included a comprehensive
list of Judaic classes for adults.
Area temples, synagogues and
other educational institutions are
offering more than enough op-
portunities to quench even the
most potent thirsts for Jewish
learning.
Or, maybe the ink on the
diploma is still fresh and your
child's post-college address is
once again your house. We've
talked to a number of families
who are finding this scenario the
norm.
So, whether you're heading
back to school or putting your
child on the school bus, we hope
our "Family" section helps you
with the issues families face at this
time of year.
