Penelope A. Collins, a special-
ist who runs the options behind
the counter for Spear, Leeds and
Kellogg, admires Ms. Selbst for
having the courage to crochet at
work, an activity some working
women would consider "taboo,"
she says.
With not that many women on
the floor, "we tend to have to go
the extra mile to prove ourselves
and establish our reputations,"
Ms. Collins says. "A woman cro-
cheting is not what you would
think a woman who is trying to
establish herself should be do-
ing."
For Ms. Collins, seeing Ms.
Selbst crocheting in the crowd
"shows she feels confident
enough about her position. She
doesn't care what other people
think; it shows freedom. She's
been here for 10 years; she's al-
ready proven herself." 0
