wimmers led the way for
Detroit Maccabi athletes in
Los Angeles last week, col-
lecting 69 individual and re-
lay medals at the regional
Maccabi Youth Games.
Detroit delegations also corn-
peted at regional games in Hous-
ton last week and on Long Island
this week, while a contingent of
36 athletes from Ann Arbor par-
ticipated in the Columbus, Ohio,
regional.

Detroit swimmers harvested gold.

In swimming in L.A., the De-
troit team was led by Jeremy
Landa (11 medals, including four
gold) and Melissa Axner (five gold,
two silver). Other swimming
medalists were Davita Burkhead-
Weiner (three gold, three silver,
one bronze), Jessica Canosa (3-2-
1), Julia Music (2-4-3), Jared Matz
(two silver), Danny Buch (two sil-
ver, two bronze), Steve Misuraca
(2-5-1), Mike Letvin (one silver,
one bronze), Cary Belin (1-2-1)
and David Stegman (3-4-2).
Landa won the boys 12-14 age
group 200 free in 1:56.35.
Stegman took the boys 15-16 100
fly in 57.18 and Landa the 12-14
in 58.37.
Landa won the 50 free in 23.91
and Axner the girls 15-16 in
26.00. She won the 100 back in

the 12-14 200 back in 2:22.18.
In track, Chad DeWolf took
four individual gold medals in the
boys 15-16 age group: 11:88 in the
100 meters, 23:41 in the 200, 52.9
in the 400, and 17.7 in the 110
hurdles. Other highlights includ-
ed Jeff Nolish's 17.7 in the 12-14
100 hurdles and Joe Tigay win-
ning the 12-14 shot put with a
39'5".
Detroiters won gold medals in
five relays. The boys 15-16
quartet of DeWolf, Robert
Deroven, Sam Berman and
Mike Liefer took the 4x100 in
47.2.
In volleyball, Detroiters
took the bronze medal in Los
Angeles. A
In golf, Brad Schwartz and
Danny Krochrnal won team
gold medals and Schwartz
won an individual gold. Elana
Goldenberg and Jeff Nash
won silver medals.

Houston results
In girls soccer at Houston,
Detroit earned a bronze
medal with a 1-0 victory over St.
Louis on a second-half goal by
Stephanie Levine. She was set up
by Mindy Pickens and Lindsey
Fox.
The team finished the tourna-
ment 3-3, with wins over St.
Louis, Houston and Miami.
In 12-14 boys basketball, De-
troit earned a bronze medal. In
opening games, they lost to
Kansas City, 55-48, and to Hous-
ton, 57-46. Against St. Louis, De-
troit got two clutch free throws
from Nathan Kunzman to pre-
serve a 5249 overtime win. Adam
Babcock and Richie Wallace had
13 points apiece, and Andy
Fraiberg contributed 11 points

and 12 rebounds.

with Babcock's 21 points and nine
