marvelous scenery go by, spot-
ting a gargantuan whale swim-
ming among the icebergs, seeing
the large sea otters as they float
by on their backs. And then you
get offthe ship to experience the
land first hand.
You visit the goldrush boom-
town of Skagway, see the elabo-
rately carved totem poles in
Ketchikan, explore the old Russ-
ian trading post of Sitka (don't
miss the folk dance show), expe-
rience the beautiful blue chasms
of the vast Mendenhall Glacier.
One of my fellow passengers
took a fishing excursion. He
brought back a 40-pound salmon
that he had caught. Pretty im-
pressive. But he didn't offer me
any. However, I ate lots of won-
derful salmon in the ship's din-
ing room. I also ate the fresh
fabulous fish at a salmon bake at
a lovely lodge that was nestled
between snow capped mountains
(in the distance).
I got to the rustic lodge by
means of a five passenger sea-
plane that winged its way over
land and water to the glistening
lake that the lodge overlooked.
The awe-inspiring flight and de-
lectable salmon bake made for
a very special day.
Alaska. It's huge and magnif-
icent. It's beautiful and exciting.

Travel Missions
Are Planned

A wide variety of missions to Is-
rael is being offered by the Jew-
ish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit in conjunction with the
United Jewish Appeal.
Currently, enrollment is un-
der way for a winter family mis-
sion Dec. 24-Jan. 31, 1996.
Hiking, discussions, sight-seeing,
cruises and opportunities to meet
with immigrants from the former
Soviet Union and Ethiopia are
some of the activities planned.
The mission has been designed
for families with children age 7
or older. For children celebrating
a bar or bat mitzvah, the mission
is free if they are accompanied by
a parent.
