Franklin Roosevelt's adminis- tration there was a plan to move Jews from Nazi Germany to Alaska? Going back to 1867, the American flag was raised for the first time over the newly pur- chased land by Benjamin Levi. In 1885, the first permanent Jewish settlers in Juneau were the Robert Goldstein family. They set up a fur trading post, and dealt in sable, beaver, marten and mink. Dawson City in 1898 was the site of the first Jewish services, and about 40 people gathered to pray. In 1901, the Jews in the shtetl of Nome formed the first Jewish organization in. Alaska, and it was called the Nome Hebrew Benevolent Society. These Jews worked primarily in shipping and retailing. Anchorage elected its first Jew- ish mayor, Leopold David, in 1920. Ike Bayles, a native of Lithuania, is another important name in Anchorage's history. He has a large clothing store and was a member of the town's first city council. Probably the best known Jew- ish citizen of Alaska is Ernest Gruening. He was governor from 1939 to 1953 and was one of the first senators elected when Alas- ka became the 49th state on Jan- uary 3, 1959. The synagogue in Anchorage is called Beth Sholom and can seat up to 400 worshippers. There are many ways to get to Alaska. Call your friendly travel agent, and you will get lots of op- tions. But during the summer months you have balmy breezes and sunlight until 11 p.m. There are fancy, dress-up cruises that offer Broadway en- tertainment in a night club at- mosphere every night. These trips have Las Vegas-type gam- bling on board, gourmet meals (four and five times a day), great service and a pretty hefty bill. Another kind of cruise is the one I took last June. You can wear jeans day and night. The food is adequate and plentiful The cabins have top and bottom bunk beds. There is an emphasis on education, and prices are in the low to medium category. But the real thrills of an Alaskan cruise are watching the
