Name Carefully,
Expert Says

Sidi tells in her book The
oinplete Book of Hebrew
Baby Names illustrates the im-
portance of knowing what a
child's name means.
A soldier returned from a
victorious campaign in the Sinai
Peninsula and decided to name
his daughter in honor of the
Kadesh Operation (Kadesh is
the biblical name for Sinai). He
called his daughter Kdesha, the
feminine form of Kadesh.
In a short period of time, he
discovered the meaning of his
newborn daughter's name; Kde-
sha was used in the Bible to de-
scribe a prostitute. He quickly
changed her name.
"Hebrew names, as well as
English ones, that are given by
parents with wild imaginations
might not be the perfect names
for those who will have to carry
them," Ms. Sidi wrote.
While many observant Jews
and Israelis give their child-
ren Hebrew names only, the ma-
jority of American Jews impart
the Hebrew moniker as a second
name to be used somewhat in-
frequently. For example, the He-
brew name is used to call
someone up to the Torah or writ-
ten on the wedding ketubah.
Because the name is still an
important part of Jewish iden-
tity, it is essential to take just as
much care in choosing it as it is
with the English name.
Ms. Sidi gave the following
suggestions for choosing a He-
brew name.
1. Don't choose a Hebrew
name because it is melodious
with a surname. A meaningful
name is an expression of parents'
emotions.
2. Avoid naming a child some-
thing that describes him or her.
A boy named Tamir (meaning
"tall, like a palm tree") would be
embarrassing to a short teen-
ager.
3. Don't give a long, compli-
cated name to a child who may
have difficulty pronouncing it.
Similarly, don't give a child a
name that is hard to spell.
4. Avoid Hebrew names that
don't sound proper in English.
Ms. Sidi uses the example of
Shai (pronounced "shy"), a pop-
ular Israeli name.
5. Avoid a name that may
have more than one meaning if
one of the meanings is negative.
For example, Yoram is the name
of a biblical king and means
"God is exalted" in Hebrew.
Modern usage give the name a
meaning of"an unpopular boy."
