A huge 18 x 30 blinking sign
on the roof of the Rascal House,
10 Mile and Southfield, indicat-
ed "immediate seating" when on
and no seating when off ... Ras-
cal House owners Jack Meyers,
Al Hacker and Bernie Glieber-
man had what many considered
the best cheesecake this side of
Florida.
Owner John Young at Car-
men's Fior D' Italia in the
Franklin Shopping Center,
Northwestern Highway, near 12,
lost 20 pounds soon after becom-
ing a restaurant owner ... Java
Junction on Woodward, owned
by Larry Sheehan, used to have
11 distinctly different hamburg-
ers ... Old Post Office Inn on Tele-
graph and 10 Mile, owned by Iry
Grodan and Danny Vassell, was
the former Southfield Post Office.
Mama Zelda's, owned by Ira
Levy and Fred Waterstone on
Southfield, had a mezuzah on the
door jam ... Of the 325 sand-
wiches ordered by a local hospi-
tal from Hy Horenstein's
delicatessen on Coolidge and 10
Mile, not one was corned beef or
pastrami ... Hy's curiosity was
satisfied when told that the girls
didn't want anything salty.
Officers of the newly-formed
Delicatessen-Restaurant Associ-
ation of Metropolitan Detroit
were Earle Mostyn, president;
Dave Perlin, vice president; Al
Winkler, secretary; and Eliot
Fuller, treasurer ... Charter mem-
bers were Benny's Sabra, Copy
Cat, Dave's, Eliot's Embers, Irv-
ing's, Mr. Deli, Modern, Nosherie,
Original Esquire, Northgate,
Pickle Barrel and Stage.
George Agree, who had come
out of a six-year retirement to
take over the Sundog from Chuck
Muer on Michigan and Telegraph
in Dearborn, used to wash dish-
es as a 13-year-old when dad,
Nathan, owned the Detroiter Ho-
tel ... Pontchartrain Wine Cellars
on West Larned, specialized in
European dishes ... Jim and Pen-
ny Roubas, who owned Del-
monico Restaurant and nitery on
Farmer and Broadway, also
owned Flaming Embers on
Woodward and Grand Circus
park.
The new Atrium and Bobbies
in Bingham Farms Plaza on
Telegraph, were both owned by
a five-member Dorchester Corp.
... Sam Jarrus, president, with
partners Robert Barnett, Robert
Cousino, Robert Rosenfeld and

Fred Keywell ... Sam managed
the two restaurants.
Dan Hugelier, executive chef
at Shuler's in West Bloomfield
and its seven other locales, was
one of the four-member United
States team which finished sec-
ond to Canada in the Frankfort,
Germany, Culinary Olympics ...
Dan won three individual gold
medals.
Little Hungary on 12 Mile,
east of Greenfield, was owned by
Sonja and Bob Szakal Topin-
ka's Country House on W. Seven
Mile and Telegraph, boasted the
best fresh-fruit platter anywhere
... Restaurant Duglass owner
Douglas Grech was the former
executive chef at the Great Dane
on Northwestern before Carole
Haskins took over ... Previous lo-
cale of Scotch 'n Sirloin on Green-
field and James Couzens
Highway reopened as Fogo's

Al's Scotch 'n Sirloin, owned by
jeweler Al Kaftan.
