Orthodox Opposition
To Ad Campaign

>

/'

Amsterdam (JTA) — Some Jews
here have voiced their opposition
to an outdoor advertisement
campaign against AIDS. @Reg-
ular Copy:The advertisement de-
picts a nude black man and a
white woman, who is in her un-
derwear and is holding a condom.
In the ad, the woman is saying
to the man: "If you put something
on, I take something off."
The Dutch health minister,
Elizabeth Borst, said she would
not take any steps to thwart the
campaign.
The minister said public
health is more important than
some people feeling offended.
"The freedom of choice is a
very important right to me," Ms.
Borst said. "For the cause of pub-
lic health we need to have an
open eye for people who like to
have changing sexual contacts."
Anonymous Orthodox Jews
who found such a poster in a bus
shelter in front of an Amsterdam
synagogue put a sticker over the
nude bodies with a text promot-
ing monogamy between husband
and wife.
The Central Israelite Consis-
toire for the Benelux, the um-
brella body for Jewish groups in
Belgium, the Netherlands and
Luxembourg, filed a complaint
at the district attorney's office in
Amsterdam. Also, individual
Jews have complained to the city
government.
In addition, Christian politi-
cal parties here have deemed the
advertisements offensive.
Fervently Orthodox Jews in Is-
rael and in the United States have
complained and even attacked
similar kinds of billboards in out-
door advertisement campaigns.

Request For
Suspects Rejected

Jerusalem (JTA) — Palestinian
officials have rejected an Israeli
request to hand over suspects be-
lieved to be linked to the killing
of three Israelis.
Israeli Justice Minister David
Libai met Sunday with his Pales-
tinian counterpart, Freih Abu
Medein, to discuss the refusal.
According to previous state-
ments, the Palestinians were link-
ing the extradition requests to the
release of Palestinians held in Is-
raeli jails, a subject that has come
up repeatedly in the ongoing Is-
raeli-Palestinian negotiations.
But after meeting with Mr.
Libai, Mr. Medein said the Pales-
tinians would comply with the
requests if they were submitted
according to all the requirements
for extraditions previously
worked out between the two
sides, including the furnishing of
evidence linking the suspects to
the killings.

Play the market
right and you
could lose it all.

4$2 :1=7

. • . .

.

• .

You could lose things
like extra weight. High
blood pressure. And high
blood cholesterol levels.
The very things that con-
tribute to heart attack and
stroke.
All you have to do is in-
vest wisely at the super-
market.
Buy more in the fresh
produce. pasta, breads
and cereals sections. And
purchase fish. poultry and
lean meats instead of fatty
or processed meats.
Switch to low-fat dairy
products and margarine.
And check the nutritional
listings on food labels.
In short, be selective
about how you play this
market. Because no mat-
ter how much you lose,
you've got a lot to win.
