jority of conversos, descendants
of Jews who had been forced to
convert, actually remained Jew-
ish, if only privately. The vast
majority practiced Christianity
because they were committed
Christians, he argues.
In fact, it was anti-Semites
who started the myth that the
conversos were not really Chris-
tian, Professor Netanyahu says.
And their goal was to prevent the
"racially impure" conversos, who
had risen to some prominence in
Spain, from marrying or other-
wise mixing with "pure" Spanish
blood.
Professor Netanyahu also goes
on to discuss how the conversos'
so-called friends behaved during
the_Incpi isition. Though they wel-
comed conversos into royal and
church circles, they virtually
abandoned them once the attacks
began.
Beginning his study with the
very roots of Spanish anti-Semi-
tism, Professor Netanyahu also
discusses the 1391 Spanish mas-
sacre of Jews in this magnum
(1172 pages) opus.
Professor Netanyahu, a histo-
rian of the Jews and Marranos in
Spain, has written a number of
other books on medieval themes
including Don Isaac Abravanel
and The Marranos of Spain.

Jo Hoestlandt is the
poignant story of a friend-
ship lost in the war.
With haunting, gentle illus-
trations by Johanna Kang (it won
the graphics prize at the 1994
Bologna Book Fair), this chil-
dren's book is set in 1942 France
and focuses on Lydia, a Jewish
girl, and her friend, Helen.
Helen is impressed by the yel-
low star Lydia must wear, but
she quickly learns that the star
brings a terrible fate.
"The place for stars is in the
sky," Lydia's mother tells Helen.

Host Seminar

B'nai B'rith Accountants Unit

qualify for two hours of C.P.E.;

Max Sosin
Is Honored

Humorist Max Sosin will be hon-
ored by the Friends of Israel
Cancer Association, Michigan
Chapter, at its 16th annual din-
ner-dance Sunday, Sept. 17, at
Congregation B'nai Moshe in
West Bloomfield.
The 84-year-old Sosin is a pop-
ular entertainer in the Detroit
area's Jewish community, per-
forming free at countless syna-
gogues, schools and concerts, and
for many fraternal, civic and
charitable organizations.
The Friends of Israel Cancer
Association will recognize will
recognize him for his achieve-
ments with a special award at
the dinner. The association is
composed of U.S. residents,
mainly in the Detroit area, who
have banded together to help
fight cancer in Israel, purchas-
ing complex equipment for diag-
nostic and treatment purposes.
The dinner-dance will begin
with cocktails at 6 p.m., followed
by dinner at 7, then entertain-
ment and dancing.
