ings to community-use projects
such as day care.
The West Bloomfield Parks
and Recreation Department,
through the township's board of
trustees, made a bid to lease with
an option to purchase the build-
ing.
"There is an investigative
process that we have to go
through but everyone is working
together on this," said Judy
Share-Vine, spokesperson for the
West Bloomfield Parks and
Recreation Department.

Consortium
members offered
services to each
other.

`The brilliant thing about this
was the great symbiosis that
happened when we got togeth-
er," Rabbi Dannel Schwartz said.
"Everybody started to access
everybody else's talents."
The caterer offered discount
rates to consortium members for
banquet services. Temple Shir
Shalom will provide discounted
day care. The art association will
teach a class to the students in
the nursery school.
"This is tikkun olam," Rabbi
Schwartz said. "I'm supposed to
be helping repair the world.
What better way to do this than
what we are doing?"
The board of education and
the township still have to work
through the details of the deal,
which may take from 90 to 180
days. Then the building would
have to be brought up to code and
in compliance with the Ameri-
cans With Disabilities Act.
"We would really like to do this
if we have the opportunity,"
Susie Citron said. "I hope this
works out."
Until then, consortium mem-
bers plan to search for temporary
space.
"We weren't going to do the
nursery school until 1996 any-
way so this gives us some time,"
Rabbi Schwartz said. ❑

he Birmingham Bloomfield
Art Association had run
out of room for classes and
its president, Susie Citrin,
had to find some place to sched-
ule the courses — fast.
Temple Shir Shalom was on
the brink of forming its nursery
school and day care program.
The classrooms the temple has
— multilevel, lecture-style facil-
ities — were not appropriate for
small children. They, too, need-
ed rooms.
A caterer was looking into
renting a kitchen, something in-
dustrial and big. Another com-
pany, a van service that
transports older residents to ap-
pointments and provides other
services, needed an office. So did
a human resources company.
Together, with the help of the
West Bloomfield Parks and
Recreation Department, these
organizations formed a ground-
breaking coalition, possibly the
first in the area to combine prof-
it and nonprofit community-ser-
vice organizations. And soon they
hope to occupy a former Birm-
ingham elementary school, on
Walnut Lake Road west of
Inkster Road.
"I think this is a very positive
thing," West Bloomfield Trustee
Marc Shulman said at Tuesday's
Birmingham Board of Education
meeting. "This is a win-win so-
lution for the consortium, for the
township, for parks and recre-
ation and for the school board."
The Birmingham board ex-
pressed interest in having the
consortium occupy the Walnut
Lake Elementary School build-
ing. However, board members
said more issues, such as a lease
contract, eventual purchase price
and tax issues, had to be ironed
out.
The school was closed in June
as part of consolidation efforts by
the Birmingham district. One
other school, Meadow Lake El-
ementary on Inkster south of
Maple Road, also was closed and
is on the sale block.
A commission that recom-
mended the closings in the spring
also set guidelines restricting the
sale and future use of the build-
