Arts Awards Set
For November
The 11th Annual Governors' Arts
Awards, a statewide arts appre-
ciation and recognition program,
will be held on Thursday evening,
Nov. 16, at the Detroit Institute
of Arts.
This year's awards ceremony
will be a tribute to Lenore and
George Romney. It was Gov.
George Romney who signed the
legislation creating the Michigan
Council for the Arts in 1966.
Lenore Romney acted as the coun-
cil's liaison to the governor.
Gov. John Engler will present
the awards. For the first time, the
Michigan Cable Television Asso-
ciation in cooperation with BRA-
VO, the film and arts cable
network, will tape the ceremony
for later broadcast statewide.
The CCAM Board of Directors
will honor Frederik and Lena Mei-
jer with a special recognition
award for their extraordinary con-
tributions to the arts in Michigan,
particularly the $20 million Fred-
erik Meijer Botanic Garden and
Sculpture Park and Lena Meijer
Conservatory in Grand Rapids.
Invitations to the celebration
will be mailed in late September
to members and supporters of
Concerned Citizens for the Arts
in Michigan and friends of the re-
cipients. Tickets are available for
the reception, ceremony and
black-tie dinner as well as for the
reception and ceremony only; in-

Women Painters
Stage Exhibit
An art exhibit by the Birming-
ham Society of Women Painters
will be held Sept. 14 through Oct.
14 at the Birmingham Bloomfield
Art Association, 1516 South
Cranbrook Road, Birmingham.
The juried show is titled
"Landscapes — Real and Imag-
ined."
The opening will be held Fri-
day, Sept. 15, from 6 to 8 p.m. at
the Association.
Jazz Festival
Poster Display
Posters from the Montreux Jazz
Festival, 1980-1995, are on dis-
play at the main Detroit Public
Library through Aug. 19. The
posters are on the third floor, in
the former photo gallery. The li-
brary is located at 5201 Wood-
ward Avenue in the University
Cultural Center and is open
Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, Sat-
urday, 9:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. and
Wednesday 1-9 p.m.
There is a poster for each year
of the Festival except for 1988

when no poster was designed.
This year's poster was the result
of a competition among agency
designers at the J. Walter
Thompson company. Vice presi-
dent Tim Hansz designed the
poster selected for 1995, which
may be purchased at any Block-
buster store or at the Festival.
Some posters from previous years
will al so be available for purchase
at the Festival, which runs Aug.
31-Sept. 4, and is presented by
Music Hall.
Arts Council
Hosts Show
The Plymouth Community Arts
Council will sponsor its 24th an-
nual Artists and Craftsmen Show
on Saturday, Sept. 9, from 10
a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Sept.
10, from noon to 5 p.m. at Cen-
tral Middle School at Church
Street and Main Street in down-
town Plymouth.
This show is in conjunction
with the Plymouth Fall Festival.
The donation is $2 adults, $1 se-
niors and children under 12 are
free.
This is a juried show. Featured
will be oils, watercolors, photog-
raphy, dried flowers, jewelry,
acrylics, calligraphy, sewn items,
wood items. Some artisans will
be demonstrating their craft.
This event is the primary fund-
raiser of the Plymouth Commu-
nity Arts Council.

Gallery Service volunteers are
urgently needed to greet and
assist visitors in the museum gal-
leries. Afternoon weekend vol-
unteers are especially needed.

Group Exhibition
At Pavilion
The 1995 Group Exhibition and
Sale of the Michigan Association
of Artists will be held at the
Southfield Civic Center Pavilion
from Friday, Oct. 6, through Sun-
day, Oct. 8. The exhibition will be
open from 10 a.m. - 8 p.m. Friday
and Saturday and noon to 5 p.m.
on Sunday. The Southfield Civic
Center is located at 26000 Ever-
green Road just south of 1-696.
Featured at this year's exhi-
bition will be paintings in oil,
acrylic and watercolor, photog-
raphy and an array of media in
three dimensions which includes
