Elects Board

Institute Day
At The JFS

The Jewish Home for Aged has
a new slate of officers and board
of directors for 1995-1996.

For its 26th Annual Volunteer
Institute Day, Jewish Family
Service will sponsor an interac-
tive discussion on the topic: "As-
sessing the Aging... Needs, Care
and Nurturing."
Designed for community vol-
unteers working with Jewish
older adults, the seminar will
take place on Tuesday, Aug. 15,
from 9 a.m. - noon at the JFS
Southfield Building, 24123
Greenfield Road.
The seminar will feature Dr.
Sarah Gelberd, medical director,
Sinai Senior Assessment and Clin-
ic. A series of break-out groups will
follow the presentation.
The Volunteer Institute Day is
an annual in-service training
seminar designed to provide
agency and community volun-
teers with a unique and mean-
ingful learning experience. To

Janice Shatzman

Janice B. Shatzman will serve
as president of the board. The of-
ficers include Michael B. Perlman,
Cindy Schwartz, vice presidents;
Dan Guyer, secretary; and Har-
vey Kleiman, treasurer.
The board of directors includes
Philip Schaengold, Julie Levy,
Leo Eisenberg, Barbara
Horowitz and Jack Schon.
Janice Shatzman is the chair-
man of the Federal Taxation
Committee of the Michigan As-
sociation of Certified Public Ac-
countants. She is the past
chairman of the Michian State
Board of Accountancy appoint-
ed by the governor.
Ms. Shatzman has served as a
board member for the past year
at the Jewish Home for Aged.
She has chaired various task force
committees, charged with major
decisions and transitional issues.
She is the immediate past presi-
dent of Jewish Family Service
and the Orchards Children Ser-
vices; also, she is a board member
of the United Jewish Foundation
of Metropolitan Detroit.

At The JPM

Elie Wiesel's Video Series: Great
Figures of the Bible will be
shown on Thursday, Aug. 17, at
1 p.m. at the Jimmy Prentice
Morris Jewish Community Cen-
ter. There is a minimal charge.
The first in the series, this video
will present the story of Cain and
Abel. N-'.Jel Peace Prize winner
Wiesel will explore the human
condition as revealed by the tales
of key biblical figures.
Adult art classes are held
every Monday, Wednesday, and
Friday from 9 a.m. to noon by
Harriet Gelfond. This is a be-
ginning class using various me-
dia. There is a charge which
includes art supplies. Purchase
tickets at the JPM desk.

Research Families

The Jewish Genealogical Society
of Michigan will host a field trip
to the State Library of Michigan
and the State Archives in Lans-
ing on Wednesday, Aug. 16.
Naturalization records from
Michigan residents, tax rolls, mil-
itary records, and organization
archives and other original
. records will be available for view-
ing from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
There will be no charge for this
event. A short orientation of the
library will begin at 10 a.m. The
library is open to researchers un-
til 6 p.m. Help will be available
to assist first time and advanced
researchers.

Bar-Ilan
Gala Dinner

The annual Bar-Ilan University
dinner, held by the University's
Detroit friends, will take place
on Wednesday, Sept. 13, at Adat
Shalom Synagogue.
This year's diner will mark a
double simchah—the opening of
Bar-Ilan's next 40 years and the
dedication of the Arnold and
Ruth Zlotoff Garden on Bar-
Ilan's soon-to-be-developed new
campus, a memorial arranged by
the Zlotoff family.
