spiracy mongers and those who
bring their ideas forward, a cru-
sade against evil officials intent
on manipulating lives in pursuit
of ungodly aims.
FAMILIAR TUNE
Conspiracy theories are enor-
mously appealing in times of eco-
nomic and social stress. They are
also antithetical to the values of
democracy and pluralism, always
positing absolute villains as the
cause of every problem, and de-
flecting attention from the com-
plex process of finding real
solutions.
Republican leaders may in-
deed have a responsibility to in-
vestigate the events at Waco and
Ruby Ridge.
But they also need to tread
carefully on the blurry line be-
tween legitimate criticism of gov-
ernment agencies and the
dangerous, highly divisive con-
spiracy theories — the most mod-
ern manifestation of a
