Berlin Leader
Backs Memorial

JEWELERS

Berlin (JTA) — The leader of
Berlin's Jewish community has
added his voice to those favoring
construction of a Holocaust
memorial here.
The controversial "Memorial
Monument for the Murdered Jews
of Europe," the subject of much de-
bate the last few months, has met
roadblocks for myriad reasons, in-
cluding its proposed size — 330
feet long by 330 feet wide.
German Chancellor Helmut
Kohl is among those opposed to
the monument because of its size.
Recently, the debate about the
monument has intensified.
In an opinion piece published
this week in the Berlin daily
newspaper Der Tagesspiegel,
Berlin Jewish leader Jerzy Kanal
called on Mr. Kohl and Berlin
Mayor Eberhardt Diepgen to
gather support for the project.
Mr. Kanal, a concentration
camp survivor, argued that a
memorial specifically dedicated
to the Jews was a worthy project
because no other group was so
singled out for destruction by
Hitler and the Nazis.
He said criticism of the expense
of the project was unwarranted.

Liberal Synagogue
Welcomes Non-Jews

London (JTA) — With British
Jewry struggling like its Ameri-
can counterpart to reach out to
the growing number of inter-
marrieds, a Liberal synagogue
here is introducing a new form of
membership for non-Jews.
The Liberal Jewish Synagogue
in St. John's Wood is establish-
ing a Friends of LJS category
aimed at non-Jewish spouses and
partners of members as well as
visitors sympathetic to the syna-
gogue's philosophy.
"I find it extraordinary that
there are so many obstacles in the
way of well-meaning non-Jews
who would like to participate
more fully with us," said Rabbi
David Goldberg, spiritual leader
of the synagogue.
The rabbi said the community
had to do everything possible to
encourage non-Jewish partners
to feel welcome, in the hope that
they would want their children
to receive a Jewish education.
To date, 10 people have ex-
pressed an interest in becoming
friends. The main tangible bene-
fit for the friends would be a seat
at High Holy Day services.
The senior vice president of the
Union of Liberal and Progressive
Synagogues, Rabbi Sidney Brich-
to, stressed that the synagogue's
initiative should not be viewed as
condoning intermarriage.
Speaking personally, he said
the synagogue had taken a brave
step in recognizing a situation
that affects many people.
