Police Free
Soccer Players

Jerusalem (JTA) — Five mem-
bers of an Israeli soccer team
were released from police custody
in London after being questioned
about their alleged rowdy be-
havior on a flight from Germany
to England.
Scotland Yard investigators
released the five, saying that
they found no proof to press
charges of endangering air safe-
ty.
The incident occurred July 3,
when members of the Hapoel
Haifa soccer team were flying to
England for games.
Officials from the airline said
the five refused to fasten
their seat belts and insulted a
flight attendant, causing the
plane to abort its first landing ap-
proach.
The plane later landed safely
at Stansted Airport, northeast of
London.
The team members were ar-
rested when they first at lived in
England. They were released on
bail and reappeared for ques-
tioning. Members of the Israeli
team said the plane crew was at
fault, adding that their behavior
came in reaction to a jibe made
by a flight attendant about
kosher food.
One of the Israelis questioned,
Hapoel Haifa trainer Avraham
Grant, said he intended to sue
the airline.
He also said the team mem-
bers were provoked by a flight at-
tendant, who in response to a
request by team members for
kosher food, referred to the food
as "disgusting."

Music Festival
Riot Inquiry

Jerusalem (JTA) -- The Negev
district police commander re-
signed from his post after an in-
ternal police investigation found
him responsible for the tragedy
at a music festival last month in
which three youths were crushed
to death.
Yossi Avni tendered his resig-
nation at a meeting with Police
Commissioner Assaf Hefetz at
the national police headquarters
in Jerusalem.
Mr. Avni said after the meet-
ing that even though he dis-
agreed with the inquiry's
findings that he was personally
responsible for the police's mis-
handling of the event, it was his
judgment that he should leave
the post.
Three teen-agers, including
one American, died and hun-
dreds were injured during a riot
at a rock festival in the Negev
town of Arad on July 18.
