TELEGRAPH & MAPLE ROAD
Jackson Square in New Orleans.
N
ew Orleans is a city with a
gracious European flair,
great music (especially
jazz) and a wide variety of
wonderful food that will make
your mouth (and occasionally
your eyes) water.
Jews have lived in this great
tourist town for over 150 years.
While few in number (now about
12,000), our people have made
their presence known.The first
Jewish congregation in New Or-
leans was founded in 1828. To-.
day there are eight synagogues.
One of the early settlers, Judah
P. Benjamin, became a U.S. sen-
ator and later was appointed sec-
retary of state of the Confederacy.
By 1949, the Jewish commu-
nity had become more politically
liberal, and Rabbi Julian Feigel-
man of Temple Sinai welcomed
the first integrated audience in
New Orleans into his synagogue.
Over 2,000 black and white peo-
ple sat together to hear a speech
by black statesman Ralph
Bunche. He had been denied a
public hall for the meeting.
One place of Jewish interest in
New Orlean's fabulous French
Quarter is the Hermann-Grima
House. Built in 1831, the house
is open to the public and has
beautiful antiques, a charming
inner courtyard and separate
kitchen house.
The historic New Orleans Col-
lection at 533 Royal Street has
several items relating to Jews.
One is a plaque in English and
Hebrew that commemorates Ju-
dah Touro's gift of a vacated
church to a Jewish congregation
in 1850.
The collection's library has two
rare books on the history of the
Jews in New Orleans. Art lovers
will enjoy visiting the Nahan Gal-
leries at 540 Royal Street. In-
eluded in the excellent display are
pieces by Jewish artists such as
Agam, Chagall and Shalom of
Safed.
Leaving the French Quarter,
take the low-cost St. Charles
streetcar to the Garden District.
At 4338 St. Charles Avenue,
you'll find the Touro Synagogue,
which houses the sixth-oldest
Jewish congregation in the Unit-
ed States, and the oldest outside
of the 13 original colonies. In ad-
dition to its lovely Greek-ap-
pointed sanctuary, Touro is also
noted for its lovely formal gar-
dens.
At 6227 St. Charles Avenue is
Temple Sinai, New Orlean's first
Reform congregation. The build-
ing is a domed Byzantine-style
structure completed in 1927. The
temple is widely known for its
valuable art collection, which in-
cludes works by Chaim Gross,
Shlomo Katz, Louise Nevelson
and Marc Chagall.
The huge Tulane University
campus begins at 6400 St.
Charles Avenue. Visit the presi-
dent's mansion, which was once
the home of Jewish immigrant
Samuel Zemurray. Mr. Zemur-
ray arrived in the United States
penniless. He entered the banana
business as a young man and
eventually became president of
the giant United Fruit Company.
For additional information
about Jewish New Orleans, visi-
tors can contact the Jewish Com-
munity Center or the New
Orleans Federation office at 1539
Jackson Avenue.
As for non-Jewish New Or-
leans, it is a city to cover by foot,
especially the famous french
Quarter. Self-guided tours of the
colorful quarter are described in
tourist literature. A daylight tour
can take two or three hours.
