Q: I seem to recall that a certain
Sephardic Jew represented Florida
in the U.S. Senate in the years im-
mediately preceding the secession
of Florida from the Union in 1861.
I seem to recall that, after resign-
ing from the U.S. Senate, he repre-
sented Florida in the Confederate
senate. Who was he?

From reader G.C. in Bingham
Fenno
A: The man you must be
thinking of is David Levy Yulee
(1810-1866).
He was born David Levy in
the West Indies, then came in
1818 to the United States. He
studied law in Florida, then
rose to prominence in a num-
ber of political and legal posi-
tions, including serving from
1841-1845 as delegate, for the
Florida territory, to Congress.
When it was admit-
ted as a state in
1845, Florida elect-
ed Yulee its first
senator, also mak-
ing him the first
Jew to serve in the
U.S. Senate.
Yulee, who
served as chairman
of the Senate Naval
Committee, sup-
ported both slavery
and secession. Dur-
ing the Civil War,
he was part of the
Confederate Con-
gress and was ar-
rested; he was held
prisoner for one
year at Fort Pulas-
ki.
David Levy be-
came David Levy
Yulee after he mar-
ried in the mid-
1840s and he took
on his wife's name.
'His children were
raised Christians.

Q: With all the talk of Middle East
Q: Is it true there might never
peace these days, I'm wondering if have been a Lana Turner if not for
Jewish outreach to Arabs is a rela- a certain Jewish director?
tively new idea?
A: That's right — and can you
A: Not at all. In fact, you'll be imagine the famous Sweater

interested to hear the dramatic
story of one such effort more
than 70 years ago, long before
Israel was even established.
Harold Marcus Wiener was
born in 1875 in London. He
worked professionally as a
lawyer, though his first passion
was biblical study. Among his
scholarly works are Essays in
Pentateuchal Criticism (1910),
Prophets of Israel in History
and Modern Criticism (1923)
and Early Hebrew History and
Other Studies (1924).
In 1924, Wiener settled in
Palestine, where he dedicated
himself to fostering good rela-
tions between all inhabitants of
the land. He supported an Arab

Joan Rivers: The nose knows.

A: According to author Ed
Lucaire, quite a few.
In The Celebrity Almanac,
Mr. Lucaire writes that the fol-
lowing Jews have gone under
the knife: Rona Barrett, Milton
Berle, Fanny Brice, David Gef-
fen, Lee Grant, Jennifer Grey,
Joel Grey, Al Jolson, Joan
Rivers, Dinah Shore and Jill St.
John.

Girl as Julia Jean Mildred
Frances Turner? Maybe it
would work as a monogram,
but it hardly would have caught
fire in a world of Ritas and Avas
and Merles.
Soon after being discovered
(whether it was actually at
Schwab's is up for debate), Ju-
lia Jean met up with Jewish di-
rector Mervyn Le Roy. It was
he who came up with the lus-
cious "Lana."

Q: For years now I have been
deeply troubled by the sexist
language prevalent throughout
Hebrew.
Let me start right at the top, with
God. I mean, do we really have to
refer to God as
He? What
would be wrong
with He-She,
for example,
or, better yet,
She-He?
Oh, I hear
your skepti-
cism already,
Tell Me Why,
but I have more
proof — proof
that goes even
further! What
about the very
name of the
language it-
self? Hebrew.
Hah! Need I say
more?
What I need
now is advice.
How am I sup-
posed to cope
with this? How
am I supposed
to deal with
this horrible
truth? What, oh Tell Me Why, do
you suggest?
A: My advice to you, my

school and offered scholarships
to Arab students. Because of
Wiener's efforts, his home be-
came known as the "House of friend, is to get over yourself
Humanity."
and take it like a man.
Nonetheless, an Arab gang
murdered Wiener on Aug. 13,
1929. He had spoken briefly to Send questions to "Tell Me Why"
the killers just moments before c/o The Jewish News, 27676
his death. The words he uttered Franklin Rd., Southfield, MI
that sealed his fate: "I am a Jew." 48034 or send fax to 354-6069.
