beled...? Are you defensive? Angry
at us for sending you what in
essence is a word? Is it just a word?
Or is it also a statement about
`—• you?
Or are you pleasantly sur-
prised that someone has the
courage to shout your name with
pride?"
Lights in Action targets one of
the hardest segments of the com-
munity to reach, Jewish students.
Through twice-a-year mass mail-
ings, the organization attempts to
give students positive feelings
about Judaism.
"We try to be provocative and
in-your-face," said spokesperson
Jill Jacobs from the organization's
office in New York "We wanted to
spread our positive energy about
Judaism by distributing chal-
lenging and entertaining Jewish
material to our peers."
Lights in Action began three
\_ years ago when New York Uni-
• versity Professor Leonard Jeffries
spoke on the campus of Columbia
University. An outraged Jewish
student population mobilized.
Their own actions led them to
question why their only assem-
blies were reactions to negative
situations, Ms. Jacobs said.
To reverse the trend, a group of
students got together a few
• months later, "to celebrate, instead
• of defend, Judaism," Ms. Jacobs
said.
That night, the song "Hava
Nagila" blared as hundreds of stu-
dents danced and sang. Onlook-
ers questioned the reason behind
what they thought was a protest.
They were told: "We're not protest-
ing anything. We're celebrating
Judaism. Come join us."
•
After their Chanukah gather-
• ing in a New York park, a mailing
was sent to a relatively small
group of students around the coun-
try.
Now, three years later, Lights
in Action sends mailings to Jew-
ish students on 150 campuses, in-
cluding Lawrence Technological
University, Oakland Community
College, Oakland University,
`— Michigan State University and
• Wayne State University.
Financing the endeavor began
on a grass-roots level.
Now a handful of large funding
sources, including the
CRB/Bronfman Foundation, the
Nash Family Foundation and the
Michael and Judy Steinhardt/Jew-
ish Life Network, provide Lights
in Action (LIA) with financial con-
-tnbutions.
/
Shira Stutman, the executive
director of LIA, said being a stu-
dent-controlled organization ex-
plains its success.
"Our materials are produced by
students for students," she said.
The basic goal is to "make
everyone do something Jewish,"
Ms. Jacobs said. ❑
