dle of town. In the late 1940s and
early '50s, many thousands of sur-
vivors were attracted to the city
because it was quiet, comfortable,
centrally located, and they could
afford to buy a relatively expen-
sive apartment here with their
reparations money. from Ger-
many. Some 1,000 have come in
for counseling at Amcha. When-
ever there is a terrorist attack,
they complain of nightmares, of
insupportable memories.
This latest terrorist attack was
worse, though, said Ms. Weiss:
`This one was right outside their
door."

— Sima Weiss, Amcha branch director

Survivors typically experience
terrorist attacks as a continu-
ation of what the Nazis did to
them, Ms. Weiss said. "The
people calling today said things
like, 'Again they're starting to
kill us, again the Jews are vic-
tims,' or, 'We thought we'd be
safe in Israel, but the Arabs are
going to come here and kill us
like the Nazis did. We should
have gone to America.' A lot of
people were very angry, a lot
were crying."
They were filled with aggres-
sion, and needed calming. Coun-
selors didn't offer advice, but just
listened attentively as the callers
vented their emotions, Ms. Weiss
added.
During the Gulf War, Holo-
caust survivors sitting in their
sealed rooms for six weeks while
missiles fell on Tel Aviv and Ra-
mat Gan ordinarily had one of
two reactions, said Ms. Weiss:
"Their attitude was either, 'Af-
ter Auschwitz, nothing can faze
me,' or, 'I can't take this again."'
After the bus bombing, callers
to Amcha had only the latter re-
sponse, she noted.
On the benches in midtown
Ramat Gan a few hours after the
bus bombing, about a half-dozen
Holocaust survivors in their 70s
and 80s were asked their reac-
tion. All knew about it. Most
were feeble, though, and tended
to ramble. None would give their
names.
One man said: "The peace
with Arafat means nothing. One
day he says this, tomorrow he'll
say something else. You can't
trust the Arab."
A woman said: "We should
have gone to America."
Another woman said: "It's
happening again. The whole
world is on fire."
