Jerusalem — Discrimination
against women appears to be
worst in the employment arena,
where they earn only 58.1 per-
cent of what their male counter-
parts take home, Labor and
Social Affairs Minister Ora
Namir said.
Ms. Namir was presenting a
report by the ministry's econom-
ic planning authority on wages.
According to the document,
women employed in the civil ser-
vice earn some 58.9 percent of
men's salaries, while those in the
private sector earn 59.5 percent
for equal jobs.
Ms. Namir, together with oth-
er MKs, submitted a bill to equal-
ize men's and women's salaries
when she entered office two years
ago. The discrimination derives
from the various benefits, in-
cluding car expenses, overtime,
shifts and telephone bills, com-
mittee chairman MK Yossi Katz
explained.
Due to the firm objection of the
Finance Ministry, the bill, which
passed its first reading in the
plenum, was reformulated and
is now being prepared by the
committee for second and third
readings. Ms. Namir discussed
a compromise between the orig-
inal version of the bill and the
Treasury's proposal.
Dr. Linda Efroni, who con-
ducted a survey on women's
salaries, found female employees
in the Jerusalem Municipality
earn 50 percent less than men in
the same grades. The gap be-
tween male and female salaries
in City Hall is 10 percent higher
than in the Jewish Agency and
20 percent higher than in the
government, according to her
findings.
