for the Arts, censorship of popu-
lar films, music and, now, the In-
ternet.
The most disturbing analogy
to Germany between the wars,
said Ms. Apel, was the censored
version of the Gulf War. Those in
power obviously learned from the
Vietnam War how the horrific
images of war could lead to wide-
spread dissent, she said.
For Ms. Apel, the study of art
is prerequisite to understanding
the current world.
Stewart Trager, a student in
the DIA course, wanted to learn
more about the social context of
German artists. "We went be-
yond the art and looked at the lit-
erature, the politics of the day,
and how all that contributed to
the making of the art," he said.
"You learn that art is insepara-
ble from history."
The creation of art ended when
the Nazis came to power. The so-
called modernists either fled or
were imprisoned. But a few
stayed behind. Lea Grundig, an
artist and a Jew, was imprisoned
for defying the Nazis. While in
jail, she produced a series of com-
pelling etchings called "War
Threatens," years before the
Nazis marched into Poland.
The problem was that no one
seemed to be listening back then.
And that's more than enough rea-
son for Dora Apel to believe that
maybe not enough people are
aware of the messages and sym-
bols of contemporary art. ❑
