THANKS ... to Kim Resler, in
marketing at the Palace of
Auburn Hills; Melody McCusker,
Machus Management banquet
and catering coordinator; and
Mark Gulliver, banquet manag-
er ... for making The Jewish News
part sponsorship of Jackie Ma-
son at Pine Knob and afterglow
such fine successes.
1400 BOXES of books in all
categories will be delivered by
300 volunteers for the annual
book sale by Greater Detroit
Chapter, Brandeis University
National Women's Committee ...
Opening night is Aug. 9, 9:30 to
midnight, at Tel-12 Mall on Tele-
graph, with $4 admission dona-
tion ... Rest of the sale, Aug.
10-16, is free admission during
the mall hours ... Last year, over
100,000 books were sold.
The one-millionth donated
book will be sent to Brandeis Uni-
versity in Waltham, Mass. ...Left
over books from the Tel-12 sale
will again be given to Focus Hope
here.
FOLKS CAN'T figure it out
... until reading the lettering,
"Taking you back in time" ... It's
the big new attraction at the en-
trance of Marvin Yagoda's Mar-
velous Marvin's Mechanical
Museum, Orchard Lake Road
south of 14 Mile ... A large seven-
feet-in-diameter clock that runs
backwards ... Sounds like some-
thing Marvin would have.
DISA 'NT DATA ... Chef Kevin
Enright, instructor in Oakland
Community College's Hospitali-
ty Department at the Orchard
Ridge Campus, was named chef
of the year by the Michigan Chefs
de Cuisine Association ... Former
Eli & Denny Restaurant at Sher-
aton Oaks in Novi is now called
the Oaks Grille ... Live enter-
tainment and dancing is Friday
and Saturday, 9:30 p.m. to 1:30
a.m.
Next dinner-theater package
by Joe Muer's on Gratiot is for
West Side Story, Sept. 5-24 ... $95
per person weekdays and $115
per person weekends, includes
dinner, dessert, tax and gratuity,
main floor seating and round-trip
shuttle ... Good to see that Joe
Muer's Grill on Southfield, south
of 13 Mile, has gotten to be more
of an operation like downtown.
Executive Chef Max Weeks at
Knollwood Country Club makes
a white chili ... Aug. 24 will be the
eighth birthday of Opus One on
E. Lamed ... The Simply Great
Cookbook II put out as a tribute
edition by the C.A. Muer Corp.,
is just that ... simply great ... with
a wonderful dedication by Susan
Muer, daughter of Chuck and
Betty Muer, who were lost in the
storm of the century almost two
years ago.
Billy Rose Quartet will be at
O'Mara's on 12 Mile and Coolidge
through August ... Wednesday,
Friday and Saturday nights ...
Owners of the Max's Deli fran-

chise that opened in Buffalo,
Grove, Ill. a Chicago suburb, are
not related to localite Max Horen-
stein, who had Max's Deli on
Southfield Road ... They are
Robin and Marty Segal ... Fran-
chisors are Bernard and David
Katz .
Dave Fekay, author of The
Sensuous Kitchen, will soon be
visiting the local area where he
used to cook up some great dish-
es ...12 months ago, Mike Kallen
had to break his record of never
wearing a tie when his and wife
Jackie's son, Brian, was married
... But it's the only time, he
pleads.
WONDER WHERE They
Are? ... Sally Eller ... Irene West
... Bobby Shan ... Martha Glazer.
I HAD the privilege, one time,
of watching a great French chef
prepare a salad dressing ... He'd
made it countless times and was
world famous for the dressing ...
But I noticed that after he'd add
a dash of this and a pinch of that,
the chef would taste the dressing,
then proceed to add a little more
of one ingredient or another ... To
a person geared to standard pro-
cedures, this seemed pretty hit-
and-miss ... Why, I remember
asking, didn't he write down the
recipe long ago and simply follow
it? ... His answer was a gem ...
"Because how do I know it can't
taste better?"
LOOKING BACK On
Columns Of Yesteryears ...
Nov. 19, 1976 ... "Quite a nice
present ... Denise Richman
Alexander, daughter of Magene
and Sam Richman, gave Dad on
his birthday ... Sam's candle-
blowing-out day was same time
Denise was informed of passing
the State Bar and officially be-
coming an attorney ... Record
salesman Art Canvasser asked
the rock 'n roll fan if he could help
him ... 'Sure. What've you got
that's real loud with a fast beat
— something to relax by?"
Jan. 28, 1977 ... "SEEING
PEOPLE ... Arthur Klein sound-
ing good singing at piano bars
around town ... Our son, Scott,
a headline news and weather-
caster for WSHJ at Southfield
High ... He's on daily about 1:45
p.m. ... Lou Aller joining the un-
told numbers that would love to
wring the necks of people in those
cars and trucks who go out of
their way to drive in puddles and
splatter your just-washed car.
"Wonder why the fellows at
Jax Kar Wash on 10 Mile and
Greenfield only clean out your
ash trays when cashier Sue
Thomason is there? ... Dorothy
and Harold Haber rightfully
proud of their dental son, Dr.
Lawrence Haber ... He's quite a
fine young man, extremely well-
respected ... and an excellent den-
tist ... Ask Lillian and Dave Faber
about the time they flew to
Phoenix and took a suitcase full
of frozen fish with them." ❑
