Eli Fischer came from a long line of doctors, but opted in- stead to study biochemistry at the Hebrew University, ob- taining a master's degree. He worked as an assistant fellow at the medicinal plants de- partment in Rehovot and re- ceived a teaching fellowship at Harvard in 1959. He then went on to study pharmacology at the University of California Medical Center in San Francisco. While there, he also worked at a pharmaceutical firm developing Eppy, a glauco- ma treatment. In 1961, the Fischers returned to Israel, and Eli worked briefly in development at Asia Pharma- ceuticals (today known as Teva). After one year, he and Dvora were invited to join Eppy manu- facturer Barnes Hind in Sunny- vale, Calif Meanwhile, Dvora, who had studied literature and Bible at the Hebrew University, earned a degree in chemistry and bacte- riology at San Francisco State and worked at Barnes Hind, learning the business of quality control. Dvora was in charge of quality control and handled accounts "though we didn't have any orders for two years," he notes. He continued to work in research and develop- ment for Barnes Hind until 1970. The Fischers always saw their company as an exporter. They be- gan exporting to Cyprus in ear- ly 1967, "because it was the only place I could afford to get to," says Eli Fischer. Slowly, the company devel- oped. In 1972, Fischer Pharma- ceuticals diversified into the skin-care arena, starting with Komed, an acne cream. Today, the company has 400 products, mainly in skin care, but continues to manufacture pre- scription and over-the-counter eye remedies. During the 1970s, exports to the Far East tapered off as the Arab boycott took hold. To cir-
