concerned that, for instance,
JDC's focus on at-risk commu-
nities outside of Israel might be
diluted by other issues.
But leaders examining differ-
ent models for a new umbrella
agency also see possibilities for
enabling Americans to earmark
charitable gifts for special caus-
es. Currently, when a metro De-
troiter contributes to Campaign,
he or she doesn't have the option
of choosing where those dollars
go.
With a restructuring comes
the likelihood that donors who
give beyond a certain level will
be able to target specific desti-
nations for their gifts, Mr.
Tauber says. A merger might
also help build up endowments,
a specialty area of CJ F.
Committee members looking
into the changes stress that
nothing will be written in stone
until North American federa-
tions, synagogues, religious and
cultural organizations, particu-
larly Zionist groups, have their
say, too.
If a merger occurs, "it will
have a dramatic effect on three
out of the four agencies — like
ending the existence of three and
altering the existence of the
fourth," Mr. Tauber says. "What
it will entail is a new organiza-
tion to meet the new needs." El

financed new schools or reno-
vated existing ones.
The third and last bond pro-
posal was defeated in February
by fewer than 200 votes. A new
vote is not scheduled.
Bonnie and Ken Gross of
Farmington Hills said they are
"one of many, many Jewish fam-
ilies living within the Walled
Lake School District" and de-
spite the bond defeat, they do not
plan to move.
The Gross' two children, 12
and 7, look forward to school ev-
ery day and the teachers and ad-
ministrators work to make sure
children get a good education,
they said.
Linda Jacobson said she val-
ues the diversity in the Walled
Lake schools and the profes-
sionalism of the staff.
"Yes, a school district is a
strong part of what makes a
community, but so are the peo-
ple who live in the community.
Many of us are working to pull
the district together and make
it even stronger," she said.
Walled Lake Consolidated
School District Assistant
Superintendent Steven Gaynor
said that families in the district
stay put.
