Penny Blumenstein and Robert
Slatkin have been named chair-
men of the Jewish Federation of
Metropolitan Detroit 1996 Allied
Jewish Campaign.
Ms. Blumenstein, who will con-
centrate on the major gifts por-
tions of the Campaign, is the
immediate past president of the
Jewish Federation Women's Di-
vision, where she helped oversee
the women's Campaign. A vice
president of the Jewish Federa-
tion, she is a member of the ex-
ecutive committee.
Ms. Blumenstein is also an ac-
tive volunteer for the United Jew-
ish Foundation, Hebrew Free
Loan Association, National Coun-
cil of Jewish Women, and Jewish
Association for Residential Care.

Recently, she was honored with
the Israel Peace Medal on behalf
of State of Israel Bonds.
Mr. Slatkin, a chairman of the
record-achieving 1995 Allied Jew-
ish Campaign, will oversee com-
munity Campaign activities.
A member of the Jewish Fed-
eration's Executive Committee,
he also serves as treasurer for the
United Jewish Foundation and
as a co-chairman of its Real Es-
tate and Property Management
Committee.
Mr. Slatkin is the past presi-
dent of the Jewish Community
Center and the Jewish Federa-
tion's Young Adult Division. He
is a recipient of the 1972 Boesky
and 1978 Wetsman Young Lead-
ership awards.

Kosher Coney Island
To Replace Sara's

n Monday, Fannie and Sol
Wainer stayed a little
longer at Sara's Glatt
Kosher Restaurant than
they usually do. They savored the
food a little more and looked back
one last time before getting into
their car to leave.
They had to. The Southfield
couple were paying their final re-
spects to Detroit's only full-ser-
vice kosher restaurant on the last
day it was open.
"We are very, very unhappy
that they are going to be closed,"
Mrs. Wainer said, adding that she
and her husband frequented the
eatery three times a week since
it was opened six years ago. "This
is one of the few places we will
eat."
"I suppose we'll have to go to

the Jewish Center to get a meal
out now," she said.
Maybe so — for a little while.
But come mid- to late-October, a
new kosher coney island will open
in the space Sara's occupied.
Oak Park resident Steve Rabi-
nowitz, saddened by the loss of the
area's kosher restaurant, decided ,--/\
to do something about it. Last
week, he agreed to buy Sara's and
turn it into a fast-food restaurant
that would feature a salad bar,
hamburgers and hot dogs loaded
with chili and onions.
Details of the sale will be in-
complete until Tisha B'Av ends,
but Mr. Rabinowitz said he is
ready to start changing the face
of kosher dining in Detroit.
First, he plans to renovate the
restaurant. He will tear out the
