BOXING page 10
that it's good for you. "This is a
great workout," Mr. Levy says.
And don't worry about getting
hurt. "I've barely even had a nose-
bleed," he says. "There are more
injuries in baseball and softball
because with boxing there's so
much training beforehand.
Preparation is everything."
Finally, there's the fact that it's
fun.
"It brings out the child in you,"
he says.
ound Four.
Mr.
over,
Move
Machismo.
"ONLY THE STRONG
SURVIVE" reads a sign by the
boxing ring at the club.
Mr. Levy says just about ev-
erybody wants to hop into the
ring right away (where the more
advanced student can actually
get a workout with a pro).
But first comes the basic train-
ing, like working on a boxer's jab
by yourself, using the mirror.
Then come the calisthenics and
the push-ups, then building up
the arm which isn't dominant,
then combining both sides.
Learning those moves — the
hook punch and the upper cut —
is last.
Mr. Levy's first bit of advice,
though, has nothing to do with
getting physical: "Empty your
mind and don't memorize any-
thing." The lure of the props is
powerful. Just seeing those red-
and-black gloves or a punching
bag hanging from the ceiling is
enough to make a man sweat.
Because while Mr. Levy insists
the program is about being in
good shape, not machismo,
he acknowledges that a lot of
men are drawn to the sport
because they harbor dreams
of becoming the next Mike
Tyson.
"Every man has had the fan-
tasy of being a pugilist," he says.
Women, on the other hand,
prefer the kick-boxing. And that
includes the older adults at the
Jewish Community Center,
where he has taught classes.
"This isn't the kind of sport
where you can discount anyone
because of age," he says. "I've
got some people here who are 65
and they're doing an hour work-
out."
Introductory classes are held
in the morning and evening,
while the club is open weekends
and nights so members can come
and go at their leisure.
Professional boxers are there to
work with clients on certain
evenings, and everyone is wild
about that — including the pros
themselves.
Arthur
Pitts,
Terry
Saribekian and Dave Hilton are
"all goal-oriented guys who train
really hard," Mr. Levy says. "But
most of all they like to share
their knowledge.
"Once you get into boxing you
find it's contagious." I=1
