Gore Fires
Speechwriter

OF SOUTHEAST MICHIGAN

Washington (JTA) Vice Pres-
ident Al Gore has fired a speech-
writer after learning that the
Harvard University professor
compared the Israeli domestic in
telligence agency to the Gestapo
in a 1992 book review.
Richard Marius, who heads
the expository writing program
at Harvard, where he has worked
since 1978, was let go only days
before he was to begin working
at the White House full time. The
62-year-old professor has written
numerous speeches for the vice
president, including his recent
address commemorating the an-
niversary of the Warsaw Ghetto
uprising.
But his work did not dissuade
the vice president's office from re-
scinding its employment offer af-
ter learning about a book review
in the March-April 1992 issue of
Harvard Magazine, a publication
for alumni.
In his review of Helen Winter-
nitz's book A Season of Stones,
Mr. Marius wrote, "Many Is-
raelis, the Holocaust fresh in-
memory, believe that that horror
gives them the right to inflict hor-
ror on others."
"Winternitz's account of the
brutality of the Shin Bet, the Is-
raeli secret police, is eerily simi-
lar to the stories of the Gestapo,
the Geheimstaatpolitzei in Nazi
occupied territories in World War
II," he also wrote.

ecutive director, Dr. Norma S.
Tucker, who refused to disclose
the deficit in the group's $5 mil-
l ion-plus budget. "But we believe
that next year, we will be able to
present a balanced budget," she
said.
Five years ago, BBW was em-
broiled in a highly public spat
with its parent organization that
centered on B'nai B'rith Inter-
national's decision to admit
women as members — thereby
putting BBI in direct competition
with its women's division.
That began a slow, agonizing
process of divorce for the two
groups that will culminate in a
few weeks when the group will
unveil its new name. According
to Washington sources, the new
name will be Jewish Women In-
ternational.
Tucker is optimistic that the
organization can pull itself to-
gether.
"We have implemented a very
active advocacy and action net-
work around the country," she
said, citing a "community-based
programming" on isues of vio-
lence, children, Holocaust edu-
cation, and supporting a
children's residential treatment
center in Israel.
