MAIL DEPT ... from Faye B. Weiner in Defray Beach, Fla. ... "Delray Beach, is launching a search for early settlers and their accomplishments. For me, I'm looking back at February 1979, when almost 100 Jewish Michi- gan transplants met at a large cafeteria to form a club. The rear room provided us limited space, with chairs jammed together, preparing us to plant the seed of a Michigan Club. " Amidst the tumult, voices try- ing to be heard, a spoon for a gav- el, order was reached long enough for us to hear that a president, vice president, treasurer, secre- tary and a desperately needed sergeant at arms had been cho- sen. It wasn't like the birth of the State of Israel, but highly exhila- rating ... Through the busy, fun- filled years, we found loyal friends, enjoyed picnics, banquets and interesting programs. Our membership is now open to friends from other regions. They are welcome." OPENING SOON will be Au- die's by Julie and Dave Beau- marchais ... CONGRATS ... to Joe Modi- ano ... on his birthday ... to Shirley Cohen ... on her birth- day. PICTURE THIS, writes Lou Surowitz, from Atlanta ... A pho- tograph of 44 "twenty-something" Depression era students taken on New Year's Eve, 1936, has in- spired a reunion of many of those pictured some 60 years after the flashbulb went off. The original party was a New Year's Eve dance held in a room at the University of Michigan Union by a small group of other- wise unaffiliated guys known as the Joe Athletic Club ... With no money to hire a band, the group grabbed a nearby radio to create the dance music and resulting fes- tive atmosphere. It was started by these fellows several months before at a Uni- versity of Michigan "bull session" when they challenged each other to name as many professional athletes as possible with the first name of Joe ... From there they became a social and athletic group playing intramural sports in the 1930s at U-M ... Many of the laughing kids who'll attend the reunion have not seen each oth- er since that evening ... But for Lou, who brought a blind date (Ethel Bleier) to the party, and ended up marrying her one year later, this was the most impor- tant shindig of his life. And so, he made copies of the photo, sent them to as many peo- ple from the picture that he could find ... Those 20-something youngsters, now 80-something kids, will get together tomorrow night at Machus Red Fox on Tele- graph and Maple ... and contin- ue the celebration at a private home Sunday afternoon. They will be coming from all parts of the country, including California, Washington state, Florida, Ohio, Maryland, New Jersey, Georgia, and, of course, Michigan ... Community-ites still residing here ... Esther (Ginsberg) Auster, Sam and Louise Deutch, Betty (Milan) Green, Jacob and Gloria Hurwitz, Sally (Prinstein) Kott, Art and Tybie (Liebowitz) Migdal, Max and Carol (Englander) Novitz, Raymond and Edith Rose, Her- bert and Doris Rosenbaum, William and Emma Rosow, Bea (Koblin) Scherr and Al Shuman. Lou Surowitz, whose book Re- inembering Hastings Street is still on sale at Borenstein's, Spitzer's ancl Stage & Co. in West Bloom- field, will also attend. ❑ Your Hosts: Rick Rogow & Tommy Peristeris Welcome to the best Greek food this side of Greektown featuring the finest lamb chops among other excellent Greek favorites. * Let Us CATER Your Next Affair.
