terminal for the shipment of raw

The Jewish community of
Antwerp enjoys a degree of se-
curity unparalleled anywhere in
Europe.
More than 90 percent of Jew-
ish children attend one or the
other of the two large day schools,
the highest percentage of any
community in the world, Ju-
daism is recognized, along with
Catholicism and Protestantism,
as an official state religion. The
day schools, accordingly, are fed-
erally subsidized and follow the
exact curriculum of the public
schools — with the addition of
courses in Hebrew, Jewish his-
tory and religion.
Similarly, rabbis, cantors and
the corps of public school teach-
ers who conduct classes in
Judaism for children not enrolled
in the parochial schools are all
paid by the state. There is no in-
terference in the internal affairs
of the various congregations, but
there is government supervision
of budgets and of property.
Most Antwerp Jews are in-
volved in the diamond industry
and work in the tiny concentra-
tion of narrow streets and formid-
ably guarded office buildings,
opposite the central railroad sta-
tion, which make up the diamond
center.
Along Pelikan Street, the main
thoroughfare of the district, are
kosher restaurants, grocers,
butchers and Jewish shops.
Bearded men in Chasidic garb
hurry along, carrying their black
leather attache cases (presum-
ably, laden with diamonds); the
language of the street is Yiddish;
the scene might be New York's
own diamond center, but with
the added quality of a neighbor-
hood side street in Williams-
burg.
For Jewish Antwerp, whose
people work or live in this self-
imposed diamond ghetto, is,
for the most part, an Eastern
European transplant, composed
largely of refugees, or the chil-
dren of refugees, from the dis-
placed persons camps. They cling
to the Orthodoxy of the prewar
`shtetl' or to the Orthodoxy in
which many Holocaust survivors
have found spiritual refuge.
A walking tour of Pelikan and
the neighboring streets of the
Jewish area is easily encom-
passed; you can breathe, speak,
eat Jewish, to the full extent of
stomach, eye, heart and mind for
as long or short a period as you
like.
Spend at least a day on
Antwerp's Jews, and at least
three more just to skim off the
cream of the city's cultural trea-
sures; its medieval and Flemish
art, the bounties of Reubens, the
Plantin-Moretus Museum of
Printing (worth a day in itself)
with its renowed, five-language
Polyglot Bible, one of the earliest
examples of Jewish printing. El
