slaves and a rubdown with per-
fumed olive oil.
Israel's democratic society of-
fers no such sybaritic excesses,
but visitors to Hammat Gader
can revel, with plebeian propri-
ety, in the acres of lush gardens,
the pools fed by warm, mineral-
rich water, cascading waterfalls,
Jacuzzis — and a self-service
restaurant providing basic Israeli
food at moderate prices. -
The menu no longer includes
the peacocks' tongues or hum-
mingbirds' wings which excited
the palates of Roman emperors,
but the pita bread, the falafel and
the fresh vegetables (grown on
nearby kibbutzim) now served
are much cheaper, more nutri-
tious and contain far less choles-
terol.
Another park feature is the
crocodile — or is it alligator? —
installation. Originally imported
from Florida, the scaly immi-
grants and their families are con-
fined separately (thank goodness)
in their own complex of pools and
lakes, for the edification of those
tourists (I am not one of them)
who are turned on by the specta-
cle of reptiles snoozing in
primeval ooze.
Visitors who can tear them-
selves away from such zoological
testiness, will find that Tiberias
has much else to offer, from
health treatment to fun and
games. This city of more than
30,000 rests on the banks of
Galilee, Israel's freshwater sea,
also known as Lake Kinneret (the
Hebrew word for "harp," as well
as a description of its actual
shape).
There is a complete range of
water sports (including sun-tan-
ning on offshore rafts — but be
wary of the strong sun), as well
as horseback riding along the
shore or in the hills overlooking
the sea.
Tiberias is one of Israel's four
holy cities, along with Jerusalem,
Hebron and Safed; and it has, ac-
cordingly, many sites of historic
or cultural importance. Nearby
are the Golan Heights, Caper-
naum, Kibbutz Ein Gev and
Safed.
Ferries take passengers on a
two-hour cruise around the sea.
One stop en route is at the an-
cient Citadel, with an array of art
galleries selling Israeli paintings
and handicraft. Resist the im-
mediate impulse to buy the obvi-
ous souvenirs that the folks back
home won't know what to do with
and look for the many good
things. They are expensive, but
of enduring quality, reflecting the
high standards of Israeli art and
the good taste of the purchaser
and/or gift-giver.
For health-seekers, the hot
springs of Tiberias (Hammat
Tiberias), like those at Hammat
Gader Park, provide all the state-
of-the-art spa facilities. The cu-
rative and rejuvenating powers.
