WINFINITI

"I understand that Mr. Mc-
Quaid is very active in facili-
tating Christian support for
Israel," a "worthy activity
(which) is applauded by the em-
bassy of Israel," Mr. Binah says.
"(But) it has been brought to
our attention that in at least
one instance Mr. McQuaid has
written to his colleagues sug-
gesting that Holocaust Memo-
rial Day is a fitting time to offer
comfort to one's Jewish friends
by sharing the gospel of the
Christian messiah.
"The embassy has made it
amply clear to Mr. Mc Qin id, es-
pecially in light of his welcome
activities in promoting friend-
ship between Christians and Is-
rael, that an activity such as the
above-mentioned letter in our
view is inappropriate for a
friend of Israel."
Few Christian friends, Mr.
Binah adds, "are involved in
similar activities.
"The pope, in his recent book,
Crossing the Threshold of Hope,
notes that proselytizing and
other forms of conversion
should not be left to human
means."
Herbert Zweibon, head of
Americans for a Safe Israel, has
known Dr. McQuaid to be a
supporter of Israel "for as long
as I can remember."
Dr. McQuaid and the Friends
of Israel Gospel Ministries could
not have done more to commu-
nicate the importance of sup-
port for Israel both to the
Christian community and in
Washington, he says. "We can
depend on them."
Furthermore, "I don't believe
the charges of proselytizing. No-
body (from Friends of Israel)
has ever approached me with,
`Well, Herb, have you ever
thought ...' and I would be a
prime target."
Mr. Zweibon says he is not of-
fended by the Friends of Israel
evangelistic efforts. Like Jews,
like any other religion, they are
entitled to present their per-
spective as "the right way."
The problem, in fact, is not
Evangelical Christians. It is not
the Friends of Israel Gospel
Ministries Inc. It is not even El-
wood McQuaid, Mr. Zweibon
says.
The problem is Jews.
"I mean, how many Jews re-
ally read his magazine? How
many is he really affecting?" he
asks. And why is the Jewish
community spending energy
worrying about Christian ef-
forts to evangelize when it
should be focusing on the in-
creasing number of Jews who
are intermarrying and assimi-
lating?
"The issue is our failure as a
Jewish community," he says.
"And that should not be laid at
the feet of Elwood McQuaid."
