he majority ofAmerica's 5.8
million Jews do not belong
to a synagogue, keep kosher
or support Israel. Oddly,
most American Jews don't do
much of anything Jewish.
In mid-October, the Interna-
tional Institute for Secular Hu-
manistic Judaism, headquartered
in Farmington Hills, will present
a symposium on "The Unaffiliat-
ed Jew." The program, to feature
speakers from around the world,
will ask: Who are the unaffiliat-
\Th ed Jews? Why are they unaffili-
/- ated? What is the nature of their
Jewish commitment?
"Choosing this subject was mo-
tivated by the awareness that
large numbers ofJews are alien-
ated from the institutions ofJew-
ish life, whether they be religious
or secular," says Nancy Silver
Shalit, executive director of the
event.
"Colloquium '95" will take place
Oct. 12-15 at the Pivnik Center
For Humanistic Judaism, at-
tached to the Birmingham Tem-
ple. Though sponsored by a
secular institution, the activities
are designed for an interdenomi-
national audience, organizers say.
Panel speakers will include
philosopher Joel Feinberg, Holo-
caust scholar Yehuda Bauer, poet
:Andre Aciman, author Norman
Cantor, writer Anne Roiphe, de-
mographer Egon Mayer and oth-
ers.
Shoshana Cardin, past presi-
dent of the Council of Jewish Fed-
erations, will be the keynote
speaker on Thursday, Oct. 12,
during a free public forum at the
Jewish Community Center in
West Bloomfield.
/ 2 The speakers will offer their in-
sights on why many famous Jew-
ish intellectuals, scientists and
artists have not partaken in or-
ganized religion. Participants will
brainstorm methods for outreach
into the 21st century.
In addition to speeches and dis-
cussions, Colloquium highlights
will include a photomural exhib-
\ it by Israeli artist Felice Malkin,
/-a Shabbat service at the Birm-
ingham Temple, as well as read-
ings by Israeli poet Yehuda
Amichai.
On Oct. 14, Colloquium '95 will
honor award-winning filmmaker
Joan Micklin Silver, who will dis-
cuss Hester Street, her movie
about issues of affiliation and as-
similation among European im-
Hmigrants to the United States. ❑
