The Ruach executive board.
In this case, several young
Jewish women, all interested in
meeting other professionals, got
together. There are now 20 mem-
bers of Ruach, which was char-
tered last month.
Worldwide, Hadassah is the
largest women's Zionist organi-
zation. It supports Hadassah
Hospital in Israel as well as
youth, education and career
training programs and land de-
velopment.
"A lot of us had the old-time
image of Hadassah being for our
mothers and grandmothers,"
said Kari Provizer, 26, the pres-
ident of Ruach. "Obviously, it's
not that way at all.
"Now that we're out of college
and some of us are married and
we have established ourselves,
we're ready to become active in
the community."
Ruach's membership, mainly
women in their 20s and early
30s, felt they were too young to
join Mitzvah, the Hadassah
group comprising women in
their 30s.
"A lot of young women have
friends who have moved away
since college," said Ms. Proviser,
whose mother-in-law is a Hadas-
sah member. 'This is a great way
to meet other people."
Julie Wechsler, a 27-year-old
court reporter and wedding co-
ordinator, joined Ruach because
Ms. Proviser, her longtime friend,
easily convinced her it was a
worthwhile effort.
Ms. Wechsler, who attends
events in the Jewish communi-
ty, was never really active in any
particular organization. Now she
serves as the financial secretary
were on to something. A few
months later, the group was
chartered.
A majority, but not all, of Ru-
ach's activities are social events.
Plans for the upcoming year in-
dude wine tasting, country-west-
ern line dancing and a road rally.
AIDS and breast cancer aware-
ness programs will also be held.
Ruach's kick-off event, slated
for the end of August, will be a
panel of young local rabbis dis-
cussing the role of young Jewish
women in the 1990s.
Group dues are $25 a year and
activities are open to members
and non-members. And while
this sounds like a great place for
guys to meet some Jewish
women — sorry, it's strictly a
women's organization.
"We're ready to
become active in
the community."
Kari Proviser
In Hebrew, Ruach means spir-
it. The name, Ms. Proviser said,
was chosen to personify the live-
liness and motivation of the
group.
"This is a nice way for me to
lend whatever support I can give
to the Jewish community," said
Ms. Wechsler, whose mother is
also a Hadassah member.
"Everything I do, I know, will be
something positive for the Jew-
ish community and Israel." D
