"We go to theater, concerts and
ballet," she said. "My children
love the ballet, and all of my
neighbors' children love the bal-
let. They've all been to classic
dance programs since they've
been little kids because I take
them. They are awestruck.
"We go to entertainment
events because that's what we en-
joy. We also like ball games,
swimming and walks. We try to
do a little bit of everything and
take in as much as we can.
"How can children choose what
> they want to be involved in when
they grow up if they haven't had
many experiences?"
At home in the Philadelphia
area, Ms. Crane limits what her
children watch on television. She
believes excessive violence makes
young viewers feel threatened
and instills fears.
"I think children need to be
children," said Ms. Crane, whose
/ company has been awarded a
White House Citation for the-
atrical achievements on behalf of
young people and a Freedom
Foundation's Medal of Honor.
`°Too often children grow up too
quickly, and I think they should
be exposed to things that are en-
riching and wholesome."
The AFT, which periodically
performs at Jewish community
centers around the country, is
represented on the board of the
Jewish Community Center in
Philadelphia. Ms. Crane also is
involved with the JCC in south
Jersey.
"We all know that our adult
theater audiences and subscriber
bases are shrinking terribly," the
AFT president said. "The aver-
> age age of theater audiences both
for contemporary products such
as Broadway shows and the clas-
sics is getting older and older.
"If we can instill a sense of the
excitement, fun and entertain-
ment value of the theater in our
young audiences, then we are ab-
solutely assuring our audiences
of the future, and I think that's
\_ very important to do."

Township Public Library's "Jazz
