Nikki Berlin
ciation presented Berlin with All-
League and All-Academic honors
for her softball skills and 3.78
grade point average. The Class-
A Softball Coaches also elected
Berlin to the All-District first
team and the All-Regional sec-
ond team. In addition, the Daily
Tribune selected her to its All-
Area first team.
THE SKINNY: Berlin began
playing on boys baseball teams
when she was 5 and has only
been playing women's softball for
two years. She says John Reh-
bine, an area pitching coach, in-
fluenced her tremendously and
taught her how to throw eight dif-
ferent types of pitches.
This past season, Berlin
pitched a no-hitter and a two-hit-
ter for Berkley. She had a .473
batting average and a .963 field-
ing percentage with only two er-
rors all year. Berlin drove in 22
RBIs and stole 41 bases. She also
scored 41 runs and was the
team's lead-off hitter.
Berkley finished 22-and-8.
The team won Districts with
Berlin at center field and pitch-
er. In the regionals, Berlin
pitched a one-hitter as Berkley
crushed Ferndale 19-2. Berkley
eventually lost the regional finals
to Grosse Pointe South.
This summer, Berlin is play-
ing in the Waterford women's
softball travel league. Her team,
Four Seasons - Huntington Elec-
tric, has a 5-and-5 record so far.
Berlin is batting .500, playing
center field and pitching. She has
a .667 on-base percentage and a
2.20 ERA. Later this summer, if
Berlin's team can raise the funds,
they will be playing in a Florida
tournament for the national
world series.
QUOTE: "I have a great love
for softball. The sport is intense,
yet fun," said Berlin. "Hopeful-
ly, I can strive for a scholarship
to the University of Michigan or
the University of California -
Berkley after graduation next
year."
