the 90s has had a tremendous
impact on traditional Jewish
been typically male oriented.
Codes of law were written at a
time in ancient and midevil times
when the rights of women were
scarcely recognized.
Today Jewish women want to
be more than onlookers. They
want to be participants on an
equal basis with equal pay for
equal work. Professor Blu Green-
berg pointed out recently that
Jewish women face inequality in
four areas: in the synagogue, in
Jewish education, in the religious
courts, and communal leader-
ship.
What about Jewish women in
Israel? Is their personal status
inherently discriminatory? Gol-
da Meir became prime minister
but has any other woman
stepped in her place? Are there
women in the cabinet or in the
ministries or as mayors? Yes, a
handful are in the Kenesset; but
in spite of an equal pay for
women statute that was adopted
back in 1964, complaints are still
present about Israeli women do-
ing the same work as men yet
paid an hourly wage 25 percent
to 40 percent less.

cial revolution his daughters start-

T'chiyah Elects
New Board

Alan Schenk was elected presi-
dent of Congregation T'chiyah,
metropolitan Detroit's only Re-
constructionist synagogue, at its
annual meeting, Mr. Schenk will
serve this year with Nathaniel
Warshay, vice president; Carol
Weisfeld, secretary; and Marvin
Schindler, treasurer.
At the meeting, Barbara Cash
was elected to a one-year term
on the board of trustees; Eliza-
beth Socolow to a two-year term;
and Al Saperstein, Raina Em-
stoff and Fred Schwarz to three-
year terms.
Elected to the Religious Ser-
vices Committee (RSC) were
Benjamin Mordecai Ben-Baruch,
Martin Baum, Wendy Bund-
gaard, Sara Friedman, Judith
Horwitz, Lydia Meyers, Jordan
Rossen and Yuval Warshai. The
RSC schedules members to con-
duct and oversee Shabbat and
festival services.
The nominating committee
was chaired by Harriet Saper-
stein and included David Good-
man and Betty Schenk.
