MEYER JEWELERS 75TH ANNIVERSARY backward to keep a full- service restaurant." The shuttering of the eatery \_,) leaves a hole in the community since there will be no replace- ment. Many businesspeople of- ten entertain clients in the restaurant; study groups squeeze in a quick lunch- time session over roast beef sandwiches and coffee. Rabbi David Nelson of Con- gregation Beth Shalom feels it is "a great shame" that the com- munity has not been able to sus- tain one or more kosher restaurants. "I recently returned from At- lanta where I ate in three kosher restaurants and none of them was on the verge of closing," he said. 'We should have enough choices out there that this should not happen." Shirlee Bloom, the owner of \- 2 Bloom's Catering, which lost its kosher supervision last fall, said Detroit is a tough area in which to operate a kosher eating estab- lishment. "The public doesn't support a kosher restaurant or the carry- out places," she said. "Most of our people will eat out but they won't bring it home." Other kosher carry-out estab- lishments expect business to pick up slightly after Sara's closes. Rita Jerome, owner of Unique Kosher Catering, said she is not interested in taking over a restaurant but may make some changes to attract some of Sara's clientele. "We are doing a good job with this. We like what we are doing here," she said. "I don't see this • becoming a restaurant. "The question we are asking ourselves now is: Would these people who go there to eat come and eat here? I don't know," she said. Leo Mertz was less optimistic that his business would increase. A dairy carry-out food service that features tables for eating but no \ table service, his eatery, New • York Pizza World, has no plans for expanding. He anticipates only a marginal increase in traf- fic. "I wouldn't know, but I assume we'll see a little more," he said. Being a dairy eatery "may have an effect on how much more we see." Meanwhile, Mr. Goodman re- • cently suffered another setback. 'Downed power lines from last week's storms not only caused the restaurant to be closed Friday, but the loss of some perishable goods, as well. Mr. Goodman plans to sell as much of his stock as possible be- fore July 31. The remainder will be sold to his brother's chain of restaurants, Lou's Deli, where `)Mr. Goodman will be employed. • "It is sad," he said. "A town like this should have a kosher restau- rant."
