"Nationally, Hinels rely heav-
ily on student leadership," Mr.
Neistein said. "Without profes-
sional leadership in place right
now, existing Jewish student
groups will have to be patient
while we go through this process
with them. Finding good people
is important. The alternative of
filling the position with a un-
qualified person isn't something
they would want either."
Mirele Goldsmith, the nation-
al director of accreditation with
Hillel's Foundation for Jewish
Campus T iife said it is unfortunate
but not the only time a Hillel has
been without professional leader-
ship for a short period of time.
"It's obviously not a good sit-
uation," Ms. Goldsmith said. 'The
(MSU) organization is very much
in a transition. What's positive
about the predicament is both na-
tional Hillel and the Detroit
Federation see this as an oppor-
tunity to get involved in East
Lansing. In the past, the East
Lansing community has been left
on it own to deal with a situation,
which is unfair."
The lack of professional Hillel
leadership also affects the orga-
nization's funding prospects._,
When Federation announced
Allied Jewish Campaign alloca-
tions last week, the Hillel
Foundation at MSU was the only
one of three Campaign-funded
Michigan Hillels which did not
receive an increase.

Mr. Neistein said funding was
not increased because MSU's
Hillel is in a state of transition.
"At the point when we have
staffing and programming in
place we will evaluate their<
needs," Mr. Neistein said.
This, however, is not what stu-
dents want to hear.
"It upsets me because a ma-
jority of the students here are
home-grown Detroit youth," Mr.
Zaks said. "Most of us will stay in
the Detroit-area after college.
People like myself and other lead-
ers get frustrated with the lack
of resources here. We need t'
have a good professional staff in
place. Without a program direc-
tor or executive director, we lack
the professional leadership and
direction we desperately need."
Mr. Zaks said he and other stu-
dents feel an overwhelming bur-
den to assume many of the
day-to-day functions of Hillel, in-
cluding budgetary operations.
"Ask me what to do with over'
$100,000," Mr. Zaks said about\
the Federation's allocation. "I
have no idea." ❑
