flat—Israel's internation-
al playground—is tons of
fun. Israelis, Europeans
and Americans flock to this
resort-laden, sun-drenched town
perched on the southernmost tip
of the Negev desert.
You can get there by car, bus
or air from the heart of Israel.
The flight from Tel Aviv takes
less than an hour. If you drive
non-stop, it takes about seven or
eight hours. I suggest taking a
tour bus down and flying back.
As the bus snakes its way
down through the Negev, land-
scapes loom up that look like the
moon. You will see Bedouins with
their flocks. Huge mountains will
suddenly appear and then more
dramatic desert scenes.
When the bleak, powerful
Negev is behind you, the glitter-
ing Red Sea greets you with
warmth and splendor. Eilat wel-
comes visitors with open arms to
experience its luxurious hotels as
well as low-cost apartment ho-
tels, a wide variety of restaurants,
beaches, boardwalks and excit-
ing tourist attractions. You'll see
spectacular colors and shapes of
nature swimming before your
amazed eyes.
A visit to Eilat can be broken
down into three major categories:
water-related, desert and town.
A highlight of the water-relat-
ed activities is the Coral World
Underwater Observatory. You
are literally below sea level-18
feet below sea level—and the col-
ors, shapes and sea life that com-
pletely surround you are
breathtaking.
To bring yourself back to real-
ity, climb up to the observation
platform and use one of the tele-
scopes to find yourself surround-
ed this time by four different

countries: Egypt, Jordan, Saudia
Arabia and Israel. You'll shake
your head in wonder, but it's true.
Two more items on the under-
water life. Try snorkeling at the
Coral Nature Reserve. You can
rent all the equipment and have
an experience of a lifetime. The
coral is alive with sights you'll
never forget. Does swimming
with dolphins sound interesting?
If so, check out Dolphin Reef.
If these do-it-yourself activities
are not your cup of tea, you can
experience the Red Sea on a
glass-bottom boat, a sail boat, a
cruiser or the Yellow Submarine.
Turning to the desert, you can
take tours that last a few hours
or a few days. You can join a jeep
safari, drive your own quad or
modern, two-wheeled chariot
drawn by a donkey. How about a
camel-back ride over desert rock
and rubble? And how about a
stop at a Bedouin camp where
you are served hot tea and home-
made pita which is baked before
your very eyes.
A visit to Timna Park is worth
the drive into the desert north of
Eilat. The magnificent Solomon's
Pillars which were cut into the
mountains by wind and water are
very impressive. This is a great
place for serious as well as not-
so-serious hikers.
Another option is to go south
out of Eilat into another desert,
the Sinai, and into Egyptian ter-
ritory. All day tours on a com-
fortable Egyptian bus with an
English-speaking guide are avail-
able. A highlight of the trip is a
visit to the Monastery of St.
Catherine, which is at the foot of
towering Mt. Sinai.
If you prefer more sedentary
activities, soak up the sun at one
of the many swimming pools in
